Gear selection mechanism, up to 02.2009: Removing and installing Consult the equivalence table for tools and equipment according to applicability among Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter. Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Torque wrench kit -SAT 8010-, see equivalent → Anchor Removal: –  Remove selector lever knob → Chapter. –  Switch ignition OFF. –  Removing central console → Bodywork, interior fitting work; Rep. gr.68.

–  Disconnect connector -A- from the gear selection mechanism towards the vehicle set of cables. –  Remove engine cover → Booklet101. –  Remove the air filter body, breather hose and air duct hoses → Rep. gr.24 and → Rep. gr.23 . –  Put the gear selector lever into position „P“.

–  Remove plate safety clip -C-. –  Press the safety washer -A- upwards and remove by turning clockwise. –  Disengage the selector lever cable from the selector rod shaft, following the direction indicated by the arrow and place above. –  Do not loosen the bolt -B-. –  Do not bend or twist the selector lever cable. –  Raise the vehicle.

–  Remove central soundproofing, bolts -1 ... 3-. –  Dismount primary exhaust pipes with the catalyser and primary silencer → Rep. gr.26.

–  Remove the attachments -arrows- and extract the heat shield towards the rear.   Note To remove the gear selection mechanism, the help of a second mechanic is required from underneath the vehicle.

–  Unscrew the bolts (from above) -arrows-. –  Remove the gear selection mechanism and the selector lever cable by pulling downwards. –  Do not bend or twist the selector lever cable. The gear selection mechanism may also be replaced without the selector cable; To do so, it is necessary to separate the selector lever cable from the gear selection mechanism and detach the cable → Chapter. Installation Installation is carried out in reverse order. The following must be taken into account: For information about tightening torques of nuts and bolts and whether it is necessary to replace them, see the chapter, Gear selection mechanism: disassembling and assembling - Components overview → Chapter. –  Do not bend or twist the selector lever cable. –  Fit the heat shield and the trimmings from the vehicle underbody. –  Install and adjust the exhaust system free of stress → Rep. gr.26.. –  Fit the gear selection mechanism cover and the selector lever handle → Chapter. –  Check operation of ignition key withdrawal lock → Chapter. –  Adjust selector lever cable → Chapter. –  Check selector mechanism → Chapter.
