Torque settings: > < Removing and installing oil seal for stub shaft or flange shaft
When renewing oil seal on left
When renewing oil seal on left
–  Raise vehicle until weight is taken off front axle.
   
–  Unscrew bolt for drive shaft/wheel hub -arrow- and wheel bolts for left wheel.
–  Raise vehicle.
–  Remove left wheel.
–  Remove noise insulation tray.
–  Turn steering to left lock.
–  Unbolt drive shaft from flange shaft.

–  Pull connector off multi-function switch.

–  Separate threaded connection -arrow- between wheel bearing housing and lower swivel joint.
–  Press drive shaft out of wheel bearing housing → Running gear, axles, steering - front and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Remove left drive shaft, taking care not to damage multi-function switch.

–  Remove flange shaft with -VW 771- and -VW 421-.
–  Always renew flange shaft circlip.

–  Clamp flange shaft in vice with protective jaw covers.
–  Use new circlip -A- to press old circlip out of groove in flange shaft.

–  Pull out flange shaft oil seal using -VW 771- and -VW 771/37-.

–  Drive oil seal in onto stop with -VW 195-.
–  Half-fill space between sealing lip and dust lip with grease -G 052 128 A1-.
–  Install flange shaft.
–  Install drive shaft.
–  Plug connector into multi-function switch.

–  Assemble threaded connection between left wheel bearing housing and lower suspension link -arrow- → Running gear, axles, steering - front and four-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.
–  Fit wheel.
–  With gearbox installed, check gear oil level in final drive → Chapter.
–  Install noise insulation tray.
