Removing and installing dash panel
Removing and installing dash panel
  Note
If electrical wires are disconnected or removed and installed, make corresponding drawings or photos. This guarantees the original layout.
Removing
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Reconnect vehicle battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
–  Remove side dash panel covers → Chapter.
–  Removing and installing footwell cover → Chapter.
–  Remove glove compartment → Chapter.
–  Detach connector from front passenger airbag → Chapter.
–  Remove dash panel compartment, centre → Chapter.
–  Remove button module in storage compartment in centre console → Electrical system; Rep. gr.96.
–  Remove holder for switch unit, centre console → Chapter.
–  Remove gearstick sleeve or gear selector cover from the mountings → Rep. gr.34.
–  Remove centre console cover → Chapter.
–  Remove footwell side trims → Chapter.
–  Remove trim, centre console, rear → Chapter.
–  Remove centre console extension → Chapter.
–  Remove centre armrest → Chapter.
–  Remove button for electromechanical parking brake -E538- and button for AUTO HOLD -E540-. → Electrical system; Rep. gr.96.
–  Remove centre console → Chapter.
–  Remove trim for heating and air-conditioning control system → Chapter.
–  Remove air-conditioning control component:
t  Remove operating and display unit for Climatronic air conditioning system -E87- with Climatronic control unit -J255-. → Heater, air conditioning system; Rep. gr.87.
t  Removing Air-conditioning control unit -J301- → Heating, air-conditioning; Rep. gr.87.
–  Remove trim strip with integrated warning light switch -E3- → Chapter.
–  Remove trim strip on driver's side → Chapter.
–  Remove light switch -E1- → Electrical system; Rep. gr.96.
–  Remove trim for light switch -E1- → Chapter.
–  Remove vent trim, dash panel → Chapter.
–  Remove radio or navigation system → Communication; Rep. gr.91.
–  Remove dash panel compartment, centre → Chapter
–  Remove driver airbag unit.
–  Remove steering wheel → Running gear, axles, steering; Rep. gr.48.
–  Remove steering column trim → Chapter.
–  Remove dash panel insert → Electrical system; Rep. gr.90.
–  Remove steering column switch → Electrical system; Rep. gr.94.
–  Remove knee airbag → Chapter.
–  Detach connectors from left vent temperature sender -G150- and right vent temperature sender -G151-. → Heating, air conditioning system; Rep. gr.87.
   
–  Lift out air duct, middle, -1- upwards.
–  Remove the two bolts -2- (1.5 Nm).
–  Detach left air duct -3- and right air duct -4- from intermediate piece.
  Note
The left air duct -3- and right air duct -4- remain on the dash panel when removed.

   
–  Remove bolts -1- to -12-.

–  Pull dash panel slightly towards the vehicle interior and remove sunlight penetration photosensor -G107- or sunlight penetration photosensor 2 -G134- → Heating, air conditioning system; Rep. gr.87.
–  Disconnect the electrical connectors depending on vehicle equipment.
  Note
A 2nd mechanic is required to remove the dash panel.
–  Remove dash panel from vehicle interior and place on a soft surface.
Installing
–  Install in reverse order of removal.
   
  Note
Remove cable holder -13- before installation. In this area, the electrical cable must be protected against noise formation, e.g. with insulating tape.
–  During installation of dash panel, bolts must be installed in the sequence -1- to -12-.
The specified torque is 1.5 Nm.

–  Switch on ignition.
  WARNING
Ensure that nobody is in vehicle.
–  Reconnect vehicle battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27.
