Shift unit of the gear selection mechanism, vehicles up to 02.2009: Removing and installing Consult the equivalence table for tools and equipment according to applicability among Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter. Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Base -VAG 1921-, see equivalent → Anchor Removal: Vehicles with sleeve, interlock button in the side on the handle –  Removing the gear selector handle → Chapter. –  Switch ignition OFF. –  Remove selector lever display illumination bulb -L101- → Chapter. All: –  Removing central console → Bodywork, interior fitting work; Rep. gr.68.

–  Detach electrical connector -A- (shift unit / vehicle wiring harness).   Note Ignore -item B-, -item C- and -item 1-.

Vehicle 2.0l TSI 155 kW: –  Unplug electrical connector -1- from air mass meter - G70-. –  Remove air hose -2-. –  Screw out bolt -4- and detach air cleaner housing.   Note Possible disregarding of -item 3-. –  Put the gear selector lever into position „P“.

–  Remove plate safety clip -C-. –  Press the safety washer -A- upwards and remove by turning clockwise. –  Press selector lever cable off selector shaft lever in -direction of arrow- and lift clear. –  Do not loosen the bolt -B-.   Note Do not bend or twist the selector lever cable. –  Raise the vehicle.

–  Remove the centre noise insulation -fastening parts 1 and 2-. –  Dismount primary exhaust pipes with the catalyser and primary silencer → Rep. gr.26. –  Remove the cardan shaft → Rear final drive 0AV and 0BR; Rep. gr. 39 .

–  Unscrew the left and right nuts -arrows- of the vehicle underbody covers.

–  Remove the attachments -arrows- and extract the heat shield towards the rear.   Note

The assistance of a second mechanic is required to detach the shift unit from below. –  Unscrew the bolts (from above) -arrows-. –  Detach shift unit together with selector lever cable by pulling them off downwards.   Note Do not bend or twist the selector lever cable. The shift unit can of the gear selector mechanism can also be renewed without the selector lever control cable. For this purpose, the selector lever cable must be separated from the shift unit of the gear selector mechanism; Separate the control cable from the selector lever → Chapter. Installation Installation is carried out in reverse order. The following must be taken into account: l  Tightening torques → Chapter „Gear selection mechanism, vehicles up to 02.2009: Assembly overview“   Note Do not bend or twist the selector lever cable. –  Install heat shield → Rep. gr.66. –  Fit the cardan shaft → Rear final drive 0AV and 0BR; Rep. gr.39. –  Install exhaust system so it is free of stress → Rep. gr.26. –  Fit the selector lever handle → Chapter. –  Check operation of ignition key withdrawal lock → Chapter. –  Adjust selector lever cable → Chapter. –  Check the gear mechanism → Chapter.
