Removing and installing ribbed belt

Special tools, testers and auxiliary items

  • ◆ Hexagon bolt M8x80

Note:

When installing the belt ensure it is correctly seated in the pulley.

Removing

  • ‒ Remove air cleaner upper part complete with air mass meter (G70):

=> Repair group 24; Motronic injection and ignition system; Servicing injection part

  • ‒ Disconnect solenoid valve 1 (N80) with retaining ring from air cleaner lower part , Servicing activated charcoal filter system.
  • ‒ Remove air cleaner lower part.

  • ‒ → Screw a M8x80 bolt in tensioner threaded hole -A- until the ribbed belt is no longer under tension.

Note:

Only screw bolt in until the ribbed belt can be removed, otherwise the tensioner housing can be damaged.

  • ‒ Remove ribbed belt.

Installing

Note:

Before fitting the ribbed belt ensure that all sub-assemblies (alternator, air conditioner compressor, vane pump) are tight.

  • ‒ → Fit ribbed belt.
  • ‒ Remove M8 bolt from the tensioner!
  • ‒ Install air cleaner lower part:

=> Repair group 24; Motronic injection and ignition system; Servicing injection pump

  • ‒ Connect solenoid valve 1 (N80) with retaining ring to air filter lower part.
  • ‒ Install air cleaner upper part complete with air mass meter (G70).
  • ‒ Start engine and check belt running.

Note:

Engines with an air conditioner compressor are fitted with a double ribbed belt.
