Removing
Note safety precautions before starting work → Chapter
Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
  Note
To carry out this work it will be necessary to disconnect battery earth strap. For this purpose, first check whether a coded radio is fitted. Where necessary, check the anti-theft coding first.
–  With the ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap.
l  The fuel tank must be empty when it is removed from the vehicle in order to reduce weight. Drain the tank if necessary.
–  Fold rear seat bench forwards.
–  Remove cover from fuel delivery unit.
–  Remove connector from the flange.
–  Empty the fuel tank
–  Remove rear right hand side wheel housing protection: → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.63.
–  Remove the rear axle → Running gear, shafts, steering, front-wheel drive and 4WD; Rep. gr.42

–  Disconnect the fuel supply -1- and return -2- tubes in the front right of the tank by pressing on the release tags.
–  Remove rear silencer.
–  Remove left heat shield.

–  Extract the bolts from the filler neck -arrows-.
–  Support the fuel tank with the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-.

–  Unscrew securing bolts for fuel tank -arrows-.
–  Extract the fuel filler neck from the rubber seal on the fuel tank cover and lower the fuel tank.
Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse order of removal while noting the following:
t  Breather and fuel hoses are to be installed kink-free.
t  Ensure that fuel hose connections are tight.
t  Do not mix up the feed and return tubes (Return tube blue or with blue marking, feed tube black).
t  Clip the fuel lines on the fuel tank.
  Note
After installing fuel tank, check that the supply, return and breather pipes are still clipped onto the fuel tank.
