Checking engine oil cooler for leaks

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Refractometer -T10007A-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamps up to Ø 25 mm -3094-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Coolant tester -V.A.G 1274B-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Adapter for cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274/8-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Collector tray for workshop crane -VAS 6208-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Pliers for spring-loaded band-type clamps -VAS 6499-, see equivalent → Anchor

   
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.

Prerequisites:
l  Engine cold
Checking sequence
–  Remove the underbody protection → Bodywork, exterior assembly work; Rep. gr.50.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Loosen hose clip on engine oil cooler with spring-type clip pliers -VAS 5024-.
–  Remove engine oil cooler with housing. → Chapter
  Note
t  Collect escaping coolant with drip tray -V.A.G 1306- or drip tray -VAS 6208-.
t  Collect leaking engine oil with a cleaning cloth, if necessary.

Checking the removed state
–  Clamp housing with old seal on a suitable, level and clean surface.
–  Attach plug-2- to venting connection of expansion tank -1-.
–  Secure coolant hose -3- on engine oil cooler and expansion tank.
–  Fill expansion tank up to „Max“ marking.
–  Fit cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274- with adapter for cooling system tester -V.A.G 1274/8- to expansion tank.
–  Build up pressure with hand pump on cooling system tester. Approx. 1.6 bar pressure.
–  Observe pressure drop on pressure gauge. A pressure drop within 10 minutes is not permitted.
If the pressure drops:
–  Renew engine oil cooler → Chapter.
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
–  Renew seal for housing.
–  Check coolant level and, if necessary, replenish → Chapter.
–  Check engine oil level, replenish engine oil if necessary → Chapter.
