–  Remove the securing bolts -arrows- and remove the engine anti-splash cover.
–  Open and close the compensation tank to release pressure in cooling system.
–  Place under the collecting tray -VAS 6208-.

  Note
The amount of water used in the coolant mixture has a great influence on its effectiveness. Because the water quality differs from country to country and even region to region, Volkswagen has decided to define the quality of the water to be used in the coolant system. Distilled water fulfils all requirements. It is therefore recommended that distilled water be mixed with the coolant whenever an older model's coolant is replenished or replaced. On newer vehicle models (model year 2010 ►), the use of purified water is absolutely essential.
  Note
t  Only use antifreeze additive G 12 plus-plus according to specification „TL VW 774 G“.
t  It is only permissible to use distilled water for mixing.
t  Coolant additives marked „in accordance with TL VW 774 G“ prevent lime accretion, frost damage and corrosion. Moreover, the boiling temperature is raised. For these reasons the cooling system must be filled all year round with the correct coolant additive.
t  Thanks to this rise in the boiling point, the coolant guarantees good running, even when the engine undergoes heavy strain, especially in countries with tropical climates.
t  The antifreeze protection must be guaranteed to approx. - 25 ºC (down to approx. -35 ℃ in countries with arctic climate).
t  The concentration of the coolant must not be reduced by adding water in summer or in countries with hot climates. The amount of anti-freeze in the coolant must be at least 40 %.
t  If a stronger anti-freeze mixture is necessary due to harsher weather conditions, it can be increased using G 12 Plusplus. It may only be strengthened, however, to 60% (antifreeze protection to about -40°C). If the proportion is greater, the cooling and anti-freeze protection capacity is reduced.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket has been replaced, do not reuse old coolant.
  N19-10327
t  The refractometer -T10007- is recommended for determining the current anti-freeze density.

1) The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon the vehicle equipment.

–  Put the coolant hose on the connecting hose and fix using the hose clips -arrow-.
  N19-10327
–  Fit the engine anti-splash cover.
With cooling system filler -VAS 6096-:
–  Fill the coolant circuit using the -VAS 6096-cooling system filling equipment → Instructions for operation the cooling system filler equipment VAS 6096, instructions.
Without cooling system filler -VAS 6096-:
  N10-10175
–  Fill with coolant up to max. mark on expansion tank.
With or without cooling system filler -VAS 6096-
–  Close expansion tank.
–  Turn off heater controls.
–  Start the engine and keep the engine speed at approx. 2000 / min for approx. 3 minutes.
–  Let the engine run untilcoolant fan -V7- cuts in.
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury to eyes and burns. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. If the engine is warm, coolant level must be at max. mark; if cold, between min. and max. marks.
