  WARNING
t  The crankshaft must not be removed. Just loosening the main bearing caps will cause deformation of the crankshaft bearings. This deformation reduces the bearing clearance. Even if the half-bearings are not replaced, changes in the bearing clearance may cause damage.
t  If the bearing cap bolts are loosened, the cylinder block must be replaced complete with the crankshaft.
t  Measuring the main bearing clearance is not possible with normal workshop equipment.
t  Do not remove the piston.
   
1 - Camshaft housing
q   The seal surface should not be reworked
q   With integrated camshaft bearings
q   Camshaft housing: separating and fitting → Chapter
q   Remove all remains of sealant with a standard seal remover or a flat scraper
q   Before fitting, apply sealant paste → Parts catalogue
q   To fit, place vertically with the adjustment bolts in the cylinder head holes
2 - cylinder block
q   2-part
q   Do not loosen the bolts
3 - Pinions
q   For crankshaft
4 - Pinions
q   For balance shaft
  Note
Do not loosen the fastening bolt
5 - Chain tensioner with tensioning plate
q   For roller chain → Item
6 - Oil pump:
q   Always replace completely
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
7 - Guide rail
q   For roller chain → Item
8 - Pinions
q   For crankshaft
9 - Pinions
q   For oil pump drive
10 - Roller chain:
q   Mark D.O.R. before removing (assembly position)
q   Roller chain: removing and fitting → Chapter
11 - Pinions
q   For oil pump
q   Adjust distribution timing → Chapter.
12 - Oil pan
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
q   Clean sealing surface before installing
q   Fit with silicon-based sealant → Parts Catalogue
13 - 15 Nm
14 - 8 Nm
15 - Cover
16 - 20 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further
17 - Crankshaft pulley:
q   Do not tilt during assembly
q   Poly-V belt: removing and installing → Chapter
18 - 90 Nm + 1/4 turn (90 °) further
  WARNING
For safety reasons the fastening bolt of the crankshaft pulley must not be loosened or tightened with a pneumatic tool, as vibrations from the tool could provoke the displacement of the crankshaft gear and release it from the pin. This would cause major damage on starting the engine.
q   replace
q   Lubricate before fitting
q   Secure pulley with retaining tool -T20018B-
q   (Further turning can be performed in several stages)
q   The angle of re-tightening may be measured with a protractor, for example measuring tool -T20030-
19 - Bush
q   With O-ring
  Note
Always replace the O-ring after dismounting
20 - 25 Nm
21 - 45 Nm
22 - 10 Nm
23 - 10 Nm
24 - Leads to intake manifold
25 - Baffle plate
q   Replace if damaged
26 - O ring
q   Replace if damaged
27 - Distribution housing
q   Removing and installing → Chapter.
q   Fit with silicon-based sealant → Parts Catalogue
q   To aid fitting and centring of the distribution housing, 2 threaded bolts may be used -M6x75- in the cylinder head and block.
q   Fix the oil sump with two bolts to ease the fitting of the distribution casing.
28 - Cover
29 - 20 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further
30 - Tensioning plate
31 - Chain tension device, 40 Nm
32 - 15 Nm
33 - Roller chain:
q   Roller chain: removing and fitting → Chapter
34 - Pinions
q   For camshaft
35 - Guide pin
q   Tightening torque: 20 Nm
