Fuel delivery system: bleed out air
Test prerequisites
l  Fuses must be OK. Fuse installation → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
l  Battery voltage min. 11.5 V
l  Fuel pump relay OK.
To avoid damage to the catalytic converter, the fuel system must be purged of air without return line after performing work on fuel lines or on fuel filter. The vehicle must only be started after purging the system of air.
Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
Checking sequence
–  Remove cover from fuse holder.
–  Remove the fuse for the fuel pump from the fuse holder. Fuse installation → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
–  Connect remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- with adapter cable -V.A.G 1348/3-2- to lower contact to fuel pump and battery positive (+).
  WARNING
Fuel system is under pressure! Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury and contact with skin. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then eliminate the pressure by carefully separating the pipe.

–  Unscrew and remove the bleeding valve cover from the fuel distributor.
  DANGER!
Bleeding should only be carried out when the engine is cold - there is a risk of fire from the released fuel vapour.
As a small amount of fuel may spill out, the bleed valve should be wrapped with a clean cloth
  N20-0509
–  Screw the adapter -VAG 1318/20-1- onto the adapter -VAG 1318/20-.
–  Turn valve (on T piece) anti-clockwise until it is entirely open.
  N20-0528
–  Manually screw adapter -VAG 1318/20- to the fuel distributor bleeding valve.
–  Attach diesel fuel extractor hose -VAS 5226- as shown.
–  Screw valve (on T piece) clockwise to stop into bleed valve.
–  Check the adaptor and hose connectors for leaks.
–  Operate remote control -VAG 1348/3A- until fuel flows free of air bubbles from bleed valve.
–  Turn valve (on T piece) anti-clockwise until it is entirely open.
–  Clamp the diesel extractor hose -VAS 5226- (e.g. using hose clamps of up to 25 mm in diameter) -3094- and remove it from adapter-V.A.G 1318/20-1-.
–  Unscrew adapter -V.A.G 1318/20- from bleeder valve.
–  Screw on the bleeding valve cover from the fuel distributor.
