Servicing diesel direct injection system
Diesel is drawn from the fuel tank by the distributor injection pump, pressurised, and then sprayed into the combustion chamber onto the crown of the piston by the injector.
The quantity injected is regulated electronically by the diesel direct injection system control unit. The electronic regulation allows the quantity injected and the injection characteristics, commencement of injection and exhaust gas recirculation, to be regulated flexibly to meet requirements.
The diesel direct injection system control unit is equipped with a fault memory. Before starting repairs, adjustments and fault finding, the fault memory must be interrogated → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051 and final control diagnosis performed → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
  Note!
t  When making adjustments and performing tests it is possible that a control unit can recognize and store faults. Therefore after performing all tests and completing adjustments the fault memory must be erased → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  Components marked with an * are checked via the self-diagnosis → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051, Interrogating fault memory.
t  Components marked with **can be checked with the final control diagnosis → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051.
t  For trouble-free operation of the electrical components, a voltage of at least 11.5 V is necessary.
t  If the engine starts, runs for a short period and then stops, after fault finding, repairs or component tests, then the fault may lie with the immobilizer which is blocking the engine control unit. The fault memory must be interrogated and if necessary the control unit matched → Chapter.
t  During some checks it is possible that the control unit will recognise and store a fault. Therefore after completing all checks and repairs the fault memory must be interrogated and if necessary erased → Vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system VAS 5051, Interrogating fault memory.
Safety precautions → Chapter.
Rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
