Safety precautions when working on the fuel supply system > < Removing and installing parts of fuel supply system
Removing and installing fuel tank with its attachments and fuel filter
   
Removing and installing fuel tank with its attachments and fuel filter
1 - Sealing cap
q   Renew seal if damaged
2 - Dust cover
q   For filler pipes
3 - Gravity/overflow valve
q   To remove, release locking lug and unclip valve upwards out of filler neck
q   Check valve for through-flow valve vertical: open, valve tilted 90°: closed
4 - O ring
q   Renew in the event of wear
5 - Earth connection
q   Check securely seated
6 - 4 Nm
7 - Return hose/line
q   Blue or with blue marking
q   Clipped onto top of fuel tank
q   Check securely seated
q   To remove from flange press release button on connecting piece
q   From fuel manifold → Item
8 - Union nut, 75 Nm
q   Remove and install with key -U-40055 A-
9 - Fuel delivery unit
q   Note fitting position on fuel tank → Fig.
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Checking fuel pump → Chapter
q   Clean strainer if soiled
q   Note markings “V” and “R” on the flange
q   With fuel gauge sender -G-
10 - Transmitter for the fuel level gauge
q   Dismount and assemble → Chapter
11 - Seal ring
q   Replace in the event of damage
q   For the assembly, dampen it with fuel
12 - Fuel filter
q   Fitting position: Arrow points in through-flow direction
13 - Supply pipe
q   Black
q   Clipped onto top of fuel tank
q   Check securely seated
q   To remove from flange press release button on connecting piece
q   To fuel manifold → Item
14 - 3 Nm
15 - Fuel tank
q   When removing, support with engine/gearbox jack -SAT 1001B-
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
16 - Clamping washer
q   Press clamping washer from heat shield tightly onto pins on vehicle floor
17 - Heatproof plate
18 - Holding belt
19 - 25 Nm
20 - Connecting piece/support
21 - Vent pipe
q   Clipped onto top of fuel tank
q   Check securely seated
q   Secure with spring-type clips
q   To activated charcoal filter → Item
22 - Sealing boot
q   After installing filler pipes fit over fuel tank connections, having turned boot inside out
23 - Filler pipes
q   With non-return valve
24 - Vent valve
q   Checking → Fig.
q   To remove valve unclip sideways out of support
q   To remove pull locking latch lightly to inside → Fig.-arrow- and pull valve out
q   Before installing remove cap item → Item
25 - Retaining ring
26 - Tank flap unit
q   Removing and installing: → Rep. Gr.55
27 - 3 Nm

   
Fitting position of fuel delivery unit flange
Marking on the flange must align with marking on the transmitter the fuel tank.
Blue or blue marked return pipe -1- to connection with identification -R-.
Black supply pipe -2- to connection with identification -V-.
  Note!
After installing fuel delivery unit flange, check that the supply, return and breather pipes are still clipped onto the fuel tank.

Checking vent valve
Lever in rest position: Closed.
Lever pushed in direction of arrow: Open.
  Note!
Before installing vent valve remove fuel tank cap.
