Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spanner -T20028-
t  Extractor -T10029-
t  Torque spanners -SAT 8010-
t  Compression tester -V.A.G 1381- or -V.A.G 1763-

Checking conditions
l  Engine oil temperature must be at least 30 °C.
Work sequence
   
–  Remove air cleaner. To do this, remove the securing bolts signalled by the -arrows-.
  Note!
t  When the securing bolts are loosened or tightened using a power tool, the threads in the inlet tube may be damaged.
t  For this reason, only use a power tool in the following conditions:
t  Maximum revolutions of tool, 200/min
t  Maximum tightening torque 3 Nm
–  Extract spark plug caps with the extractor -T10029-
–  Remove spark plugs with tool -T20028-.
–  Remove the connector of the Hall sender (ignition distributor).
–  Use a second mechanic to fully depress accelerator pedal.
–  Check compression with compression tester -V.A.G 1763- or -V.A.G 1381-.
  Note!
See relevant test unit operating instructions for instructions on how to use test unit.
–  Operate starter until tester shows no further pressure increase.
Compression pressure:
New: 10…15 bar
Wear limit: 7 bar
Permissible difference between all cylinders: 3 bar
