Prerequisites
l  The toothed belt sprocket for the crankshaft must be secured to the crankshaft with its bolt.
l  The pistons must not be positioned at top-dead-centre (TDC).
  Note!
When camshaft is turned there is a danger that the valves may contact the piston crown if the pistons are positioned at TDC.
   
–  Position the camshaft sprockets so that the marks are aligned as shown.

–  Position the crankshaft at top-dead-centre (TDC) for No. 1 cylinder. The inclined tooth on the sprocket must align with the mark on the sealing flange.
  Note!
The oil pump/seal retainer cover has 2 marks for top-dead-centre (TDC), the smaller mark (right) is for 4V engines and the longer mark (left) 2V engines. Never interchange the marks, otherwise serious engine damage may occur as a result.
–  Fit toothed belt. Observe direction of rotation if the used belt is refitted.

–  Install tensioning roller and tighten securing nut hand tight. The cut-out in the base plate -1- must engage over the securing bolt -2-.
–  Tension toothed belt by turning the tensioning roller in direction of arrow until the indicator -3- is positioned over the notch in the base plate -arrow-.
–  Tighten lock nut on tensioning roller. Tightening torque: 20 Nm
–  Turn the crankcase two full rotations in engine direction of rotation until it reaches TDC No. 1 cylinder again.
–  Then the toothed belt tension/adjustment and the position of the tensioning roller must be checked again.
–  Install toothed belt upper and lower guards.
–  Install crankshaft ribbed belt pulley again. Observe the following when doing this:
t  The securing bolt for the crankshaft ribbed belt pulley and toothed belt sprocket must be renewed.
t  Ensure the ribbed belt pulley sits centralized on the toothed belt sprocket (central holes aligned).
t  Tightening sequence for new oiled bolt: 90 Nm + 1/4 turn (90°) further
–  Installing ribbed belt → Chapter
  Note!
When fitting the ribbed belt, ensure that the belt seats correctly in the belt pulleys.
–  Installing upper section of air cleaner → Chapter
