Installing > < Removing and installing fuel tank
Removing
Removing
–  Observe the safety precautions before starting repairs → Chapter.
–  Check first if a radio with an anti-theft code is installed and if this is the case obtain the anti-theft code.
–  Disconnect battery earth strap with ignition switched off.
–  Drain fuel tank and clean areas surrounding the fuel filler pipe.
–  Remove fuel tank flap unit securing screw and remove the fuel tank flap unit.
–  Fold rear seat forwards.
–  Remove cover for fuel delivery unit.
   
–  Pull off electrical connector -1- as well as the supply -2- and return lines -3- off flange.
  Note!
Press buttons on hose couplings to do this.
  Caution
Fuel supply lines are under pressure! Before removing from hose connection wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.

–  Undo union nut with key -U-40055 A-.
–  Pull fuel delivery unit and seal out through opening of fuel tank.
  Note!
If the delivery unit is to be renewed then drain old delivery unit completely before disposal.
–  Drain fuel tank.

–  Undo connecting support -1- from body.
–  Release all exhaust system rear mountings from body. Then the exhaust system must be lowered slightly and secured in this position with wire.
–  Remove rear right wheel.
–  Remove rear right wheel housing liner: → General body repairs; Rep. Gr.66
–  Remove fuel tank flap unit: → General body repairs; Rep. Gr.55
–  Take fuel filler cap off fuel filler neck and pull off sealing bellows/cup.
–  Disconnect filler neck from body.
–  Remove fuel filler neck.
–  Now the fuel tank can be unbolted from the body and removed together with the heat shield.
