Hydraulic followers: checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Gauge
t  Wooden or plastic wedge
  Note
t  Replace hydraulic cam followers as a set. (They cannot be adjusted or repaired individually.)
t  Irregular noises coming from the valves on starting are normal.
Test sequence
–  Start engine and turn until radiator fan has been activated once.
–  Raise engine speed to approx. 2,500 rpm for about 2 minutes.
If the hydraulic cam followers continue to make a noise check to see which one/s is/are faulty as follows:
–  Removing the cylinder head cover → Chapter.
–  Turn crankshaft clockwise until cams at bucket tappet to be tested are at top.
–  Check the clearance between cams and followers.
–  If play is more than 0.2 mm, replace tappet. If a play of less than 0.1 mm or no play is measured, continue check as follows:

–  Push bucket tappet down lightly with a wooden or plastic wedge. If when the bucket tappet is pushed down a 0.2 mm thick feeler gauge can be pushed between the camshaft and bucket tappet, the bucket tappet should be replaced.
  Note
After fitting new tappets, the engine must not be started for approx. 30 minutes. The hydraulic valve compensation elements will have to settle (otherwise, the valves would strike the pistons).
