Oil pressure and oil pressure switch: checking
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Oil pressure tester -VAG 1342-
t  Voltage tester -VAG 1527B-
t  Measuring tool set -VAG 1594C-

Mode of operation of dynamic oil pressure warning
When not under pressure, the oil pressure switch is open and will close when the operating pressure is attained.
The lack of oil pressure warning opertates approx. 10 seconds after switching on ignition.
Switch-in delay of oil pressure warning approx. 3 seconds.
Switch-off delay of oil pressure warning approx. 5 seconds.
  Note
Checking operation of and servicing visual and acoustic oil pressure gauges: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
Warning light: checking
After switching on the ignition and engine not started the oil pressure warning lamp in dash panel insert must light for approx. 3 seconds and then go out. The check is interrupted if the engine is running.
Warning criteria
The optical oil pressure warning (flashing oil pressure warning light) and the three buzzer warnings are activated in the following cases:
l  “Ignition on”, engine stationary, oil pressure switch closed
l  Engine speed greater than 1500 rpm, oil pressure switch open
  Note
t  With an engine speed greater than 5,000 rpm, the warning light remains on, even when the oil pressure switch is off. With an engine speed below 5,000 rpm, the warning light goes out.
t  If the oil pressure switch is open for only 0.3 ... 3.0 seconds, at an engine speed greater than 1,500 rpm, the combined processor of the instrument cluster memorises this. If this occurs three times while the engine is running, the oil pressure warning is immediately activated and will not shut off, even at below 1,500 rpm. The oil pressure warning shuts off when the oil pressure switch is closed for more than 5 seconds at above 1,500 rpm, or the ignition is switched off.
Test requirements
l  Engine oil level OK; checking → Fig.
l  Theoil pressure warning light -K3- should light for approx. 3 seconds with the ignition switched on.
l  Minimum temperature of engine oil 80 ºC (the radiator fan must have started once).
Test sequence

–  Remove oil pressure switch -F1- and screw into tester.
–  Screw test unit into oil filter bracket in place of the oil pressure switch.
–  Connect brown wire 1 of tester to earth (-).
–  Connect voltage tester -VAG 1527B- with measuring tool set -VAG 1594C- to positive of battery (+) and to oil pressure switch.
The LED must not light.
–  If the LED lights up, replace the 1.4 bar oil pressure switch -F1-.
If the LED does not light up:
–  Start engine and run at idling speed: at 1,2 ... In the event the light does not come on at 1.6 bar, replace the oil pressure switch.
–  Check oil pressure at different speeds: Idling: min. 2,0 bar 2000 rpm: 3,0 ... 4,5 bar above 2000 rpm: maximum 7,0 bar.
If the specification is not obtained:
–  Eliminate mechanical damage, e.g. damage to the brackets.
–  Oil filter bracket with pressure relief valve → Item and oil pump: replace → Item
At higher engine speeds, oil pressure must not exceed 7.0 bar.
If reading exceeds specification:
–  Check oil channels.
–  If necessary, replace air filter bracket with pressure valve → Item.
