Special tools and workshop equipment required

Removing
–  Loosen the engine cover at the locations -arrows- and remove.
–  Remove the sound insulation of the injector valves.
–  Remove injectors (piezo injectors) → Chapter.
  Caution
Make sure that no wiring connections are damaged when disconnecting the connectors. Otherwise the whole wiring harness will need to be renewed. Do not compress the pliers -3314- too firmly to separate the connectors, otherwise the support sleeve may be damaged.

–  Unscrew the securing bolts -arrows- and put the coolant return line to the side.

–  Remove securing bolts -arrows-.

–  Unplug electrical connection -2- from the fuel pressure sender -G 247--C-.
  Note
Ignore -item 1-.
–  In order not to damage the vacuum lines above the plug connectors of the glow plugs, remove the metal clip for fixing the vacuum line to the intake pipe and place the vacuum line to the side.

–  Open cable guide fasteners -arrows- to free wiring harness.

–  Position pliers -3314- with groove -arrow A- on support sleeve shoulder -arrow B- and pull plugs off glow pin plugs.

–  Remove the connector of the glow plug carefully -in the direction of the arrow-.

–  Separate the plug connection of the charge pressure actuator position sender -G581--arrow- on the exhaust gas turbocharger and loosen the line from the retainers.

–  Hang out the coolant return hose -arrows- and move the coolant line to one side.

–  Pull connector -2- off pressure differential sender -G505-.

–  Remove bolts -4- and remove the grey bracket → Item.

–  Remove the high pressure fuel line between the high-pressure pump -1- and the high-pressure accumulator (Common Rail) -3-.

–  Open the clip -arrows- and remove the common rail.

–  Remove bolts -arrows-.

–  Separate the connector of the regulation valve for fuel pressure -N276--arrow- .
–  Remove wiring harness from rail element (high-pressure accumulator) and place wiring harness to one side.

–  Remove the connector on the fuel pressure sender -G247--arrow B-.

–  Remove rail element (high-pressure accumulator) .
  Caution

–  Remove the vacuum line -A- from the cylinder head cover.
–  Remove the other vacuum lines from the supports in the cylinder head cover.
–  Remove upper toothed belt guard.
–  Remove the venting tube between the cylinder head cover and the ventilation hose. Press quick-release fasteners to do this.
–  Unscrew the securing screws of the cylinder head cover.
–  Remove the cylinder head cover

–  For this purpose, hang out the cylinder head cover on the ridges -arrows- of the rear toothed gear guard.
Installing
Installation is carried out in reverse order, noting the following:

t  Rules for cleanliness → Chapter.
  Note
Renew gasket for bolts if damaged.
–  Tighten the cylinder head cover bolts in the following order by hand: 1 ... 6-.

–  Tighten all bolts to 10 Nm, following the sequence -1 ... 6-.
–  Make sure that the cylinder head cover has been engaged correctly on the toothed belt guard.

This figure shows the gear pinion removed from the camshaft.

–  For this purpose, press the toothed belt guard against the cylinder head cover in the area of the fixings -arrows-, e.g. using a screwdriver until you can hear it engaging.
–  Check that enough free space is left between the hub and the toothed belt guard.
–  Injectors (piezo injectors) and high pressure lines: Installing → Chapter.
After completing all work on the fuel system.
Connect the → Vehicle diagnostic tester.
Perform the function „Fuel pump activation (Filling / bleeding fuel system)“ in „Guided functions“ → Chapter.
