Removing and installing fuel rail
Removing and installing fuel rail

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Socket wrench insert -T40055-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.
t  Ratchet 1/2' x 9-12 -VAG 1331/1-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench insert -VAG 1331/6-, see equivalent → Anchor

   
t  Engine sealing plug set -VAS 6122-, see equivalent → Anchor
Removing
  WARNING
t  Always read rules for cleanliness and instructions for working on fuel system → Chapter.
t  Always follow these rules for cleanliness and instructions before starting work and while working on the fuel system.

–  Loosen the engine cover at the locations -arrows- and remove.

–  Disconnect electrical connector -arrow- on fuel pressure regulating valve -N276-.
  A23-10406
–  Disconnect electrical connector -B- on fuel pressure sender -G247-.
–  Pull vacuum hose -A- from cylinder head cover.

–  Remove fuel return hose from high-pressure accumulator (rail); release hose clip -arrow- to do so.

–  Open retaining clips -arrows- on wiring harness and pull electrical connectors off glow plugs.

–  Unscrew bolt -2- and union nuts -1 and 3-, and remove high-pressure line.

–  Unscrew bolts -2-, place coolant return line to one side.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows-, lay coolant return line aside.
  Caution
t  Mark allocation of high-pressure pipe to cylinder. They must always be re-installed on the same cylinders.
t  Observe rules for cleanliness when working on the injection system.
t  Plug open connections with suitable sealing caps immediately.
  N23-10326
–  Unscrew the union nuts -1- for high-pressure pipes on injectors using socket insert -T40055-.
–  Unscrew the union nuts for high pressure pipes on fuel rail with open-ended pin tool -VAG 1331/6-.
–  Place the removed high-pressure lines on a clean cloth.

–  Remove the fuel rail, unscrewing the two bolts -arrows-.
Fitting
Carry out the assembly operations in reverse order to those described for the disassembly, taking the following into account:
l  Specified torque → Chapter „Assembly overview - injectors“.
–  Install high-pressure pipes free of stress → Chapter.
  Note
t  Observe cylinder specific markings when reusing high-pressure lines.
t  The high-pressure lines can principally be reuse according to the following test:
t  Check taper seat of respective high-pressure line for deformation and cracks.
t  The line hole must not be deformed, constricted or damaged.
t  Corroded lines should no longer be used.
