Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Coolant tester -VAG 1274B-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Adapter -VAG 1274/8-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Adapter -V.A.G 1274/9-, see equivalent → Anchor

Test prerequisites
l  Engine warm.
Checking sequence
  WARNING
Hot coolant and vapours can cause burns!
When the engine is hot the cooling system is under pressure.
To reduce the system charge pressure, cover the expansion tank plug with a rag and open carefully.
–  Open filler cap on coolant expansion tank.
   
–  Insert pressure tester -VAG 1274B- with adapter -V.A.G 1274/8- into expansion reservoir.
–  Using hand pump on tester, build up a pressure of approx. 1.0 bar.
–  If this pressure is not maintained, locate and rectify leaks.

Check pressure relief valve in cap.
–  Insert pressure tester -VAG 1274B- with adapter -V.A.G 1274/9- into cover.
–  Operate hand pump.
t  The pressure relief valve must open at a pressure of 1.4 … 1.6 bar.
If the pressure relief valve does not open:
–  Replace the cap.
