Exhaust system: install without stress > < Removing and installing front exhaust pipe

Removing and installing catalytic converter

Removing
   
–  Pull off engine cover panel -arrows-.
  E10-10062
–  Detach coolant expansion tank -arrow- and lay it aside with hoses connected.

–  Separate the connector -1- of the Lambda probe after catalyst -G130- and lambda probe heating 1, after catalyst -Z29- (brown plug) and put aside the line to the catalyst.
–  Separate the connector -2- of the Lambda probe after catalyst -G39- and lambda probe heating 1, after catalyst -Z19- (black plug) and put aside the line to the catalyst.
–  Loosen all fixations of tubes to the probes
–  Remove the air filter housing → Chapter.
  Note
The flexible joint (de-coupling element) in the exhaust system must not be bent more than 10° – otherwise it can be damaged.

–  Loosen clamp -arrow- and push to rear.

–  Detach front exhaust pipe/catalytic converter -arrows-.
–  Remove bolt -1- on bracket for front exhaust pipe and then detach front exhaust pipe.

–  Unscrew nut -arrow- securing catalytic converter and turbocharger from below.

–  Unscrew nuts -arrows- securing catalytic converter and turbocharger from above.
–  Lift out catalytic converter.
Installing
Reassembly is carried out in the reverse order; note the following:

Renew seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts.
–  Align the exhaust system so it is free of stress → Chapter.
Tightening torques

Mounting to subframe 23
Clamp 23

1)  Paint the stud screws of the exhaust manifold with hot screw paste. Locking fluid for hot working bolts → Parts catalogue
2)  Renew self-locking nuts
