Valve seats: Reworking > < Valve control

Assembly overview
1 - 20 Nm + retighten 1/4 turn (90º)
q   Replace.
q   Use camshaft immobiliser -T10016- → Fig. to loosen and tighten
2 - Camshaft wheels
q   Observe position when fitting the toothed belt → Chapter
3 - Seal
q   Only replace with camshaft fitted
q   Lightly lubricate the sealing lip of the oil seal.
q   replace → Chapter
4 - Notched belt secondary branch
q   Mark direction of rotation before removing
q   Check for wear
q   Do not bend the belt
q   removing, installing and tensioning → Chapter
5 - Camshaft housing
q   Removing and fitting → Chapter
q   Remove any sealant remains.
q   Carefully clean the contact surfaces making sure that they are free of oil and grease
q   Before fitting, apply sealant -D 188 003 A1-.
q   When installing fit vertically from above onto studs and dowel pins
6 - Oil filler cap
7 - 10 Nm + retighten 1/4 turn (90º)
q   Replace.
q   Tighten from centre outwards
8 - Filler cap
9 - 10 Nm
10 - Roller rocker arms
q   Check that the roller bearings turn smoothly
q   Oil contact surface
q   ?When installing, secure to support element using securing clip.
11 - Woodruff keys
12 - Filler cap
13 - 20 Nm
14 - Attachment rings
15 - Pressure retaining valve, 6 Nm
q   Do not over tighten; the valve could seize
q   Clean the thread and fit with sealant -D 154 102 A1-
16 - Supporting element
q   Do not mix them up
q   With hydraulic valve clearance compensation.
q   Oil contact surface
q   Before installing, check camshaft axial clearance → Fig.

q   Remove and fit with valve spring suppressor -3362-, with the cylinder head removed.
q   (with cylinder head installed) → Chapter
19 - Valve stem seal
q   replace → Chapter
20 - Valve guide for repair
q   With sleeve
21 - Valve guide
q   check → Chapter
22 - Oil pressure switch -F1-, 25 Nm
q   check → Chapter
q   In case of leakage, cut out and replace sealing ring
23 - Valves:
q   Not to be reworked; only grinding-in permissible
q   Valve dimensions, → Fig.
24 - Cylinder head
q   Reworking valve seats → Chapter.
q   Reworking sealing surface → Fig.
25 - 20 Nm
26 - Tension roller of the derived branch of the notched belt.
q   check → Chapter
q   Tension the notched belt. → Chapter
27 - Plug
q   Fit using sealant -D 154 102 A1-
q   Do not screw too far
q   Maximum depth of entrance below support surface of camshaft housing: 2 mm
28 - Camshafts
q   check the axial play → Fig.
q   Apply oil before fitting (also axial bearing collar)
q   Replace the seal rings behind the assembly
q   Replace the seals → Chapter
29 - O-ring
q   Replace.

   
Immobilise both camshaft sprockets with the counterhold T10016
–  Insert both locking pins through the locking spaces on the camshaft sprockets, as far as the end point on the spaces on the camshaft housing.
  Note
The two locking pins are correctly fitted if the final parts -D- are in line with line -A-.
–  Insert support -B- as far as possible in the intake camshaft wheel -C-.
–  Once both camshaft wheels are immobilised in the attachment holes, the camshaft wheels can be loosened or fastened.

Check the sealing surface of the cylinder head
Reworking dimensions for cylinder head: a = min. 108.25 mm
  Note
When the sealing surface is reworked, the valves must be lowered by the same amount (rework the valve seat inserts), if not the pistons will collide with the valves. make sure that it is not below the minimum permissible reworking level → Chapter.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387-
t  Dial gauge
Measure when the camshaft housing is removed and the cover is fitted.
Wear limit: max. 0.40

The valves can not be reworked. Only lapping-in is permitted.
