Fuel tank with accessories and fuel filter: removing and fitting - Assembly overview
  Note
t  Hose connections are secured with either spring-type or clamp-type clips.
t  Always replace clamp-type clips with spring-type clips.
t  The fuel hoses in the engine compartment must only be attached with plastic clamps. The use of clamp or screw-type clips is not permissible.
t  To fit the spring clips, use the spring clip pliers -VAS 5024A-.
   
1 - Filler cap
q   Replace gasket if it shows signs of damage.
2 - Securing bolt
3 - Earth connection
q   Check for secure seating.
4 - 11 Nm
5 - Cableguide
6 - Fuel tank
q   When removing, support with the engine and gearbox crane -V.A.G 1383 A-
q   Removing and fitting → Chapter
7 - 20 Nm
8 - Lock washer
9 - tension belt
q   Note fitting position:
10 - Protector plate
11 - Fuel filter:
q   Fitting position: The arrow indicates the direction of flow
q   Fuel tank with attachments → Chapter
q   Removing and fitting → Chapter
12 - Supply pipe
q   Leads to the fuel distributor
q   Check for secure seating.
13 - Vent pipe
q   Clipped onto side of fuel tank
q   Check for secure seating.
14 - Seal
q   Replace if damaged
q   When fitting, fit seal (dry) in opening in fuel tank
q   Moisten with fuel only when installing flange
15 - Fuel delivery unit
q   Removing and fitting → Chapter
q   Fuel pump: Checking → Chapter
q   Note fitting position on fuel tank → Fig.
q   With fuel level indicator sender -G-
q   Removing and fitting the Fuel level indicator sender -G- → Chapter
q   Clean strainer if dirty
16 - Seal ring 110 Nm
q   Check for secure seating.
q   Remove and install with the spark plug spanner -3087-
17 - Supply pipe
q   Black colour
q   Clipped onto side of fuel tank
q   Check for secure seating.
18 - Return pipe
q   Blue colour
q   Clipped onto side of fuel tank
q   Check for secure seating.
19 - Filler cap set
q   With dustguard
q   Removing and fitting → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. Gr.55

   
Fitting position of fuel delivery unit flange
The mark -3- on the gauge is opposite to flow.
  Note
The fuel supply unit flange can only be fitted in this position.
Fuel return pipe blue or blue mark -1-
Fuel supply pipe black -2-
  Note
After installing the fuel delivery unit flange, check that the supply, return and breather pipes are still clipped onto fuel tank.
