Removing: instructions
  Note!
For this work the battery earth strap must be removed. Before doing so, check whether the vehicle has a coded radio and, if so, check the anti-theft code.
–  The engine is removed with the gearbox upwards.
–  With the ignition off, disconnect the battery earth strap.
–  All cable holders opened or cut when removing the engine must be reinstalled in the same place during engine installation.
–  Open the compensation tank plug to relieve the pressure in the coolant system.
–  Remove the air filter: → Rep. Gr.24
   
–  Remove the fuel supply and return lines -pos. 1 and 2- (press the lock button).
–  Plug the lines to keep dirt out of the fuel system.
  Caution
The fuel supply line is under pressure. Before loosening the hose connections, place a cloth around the connection. Then eliminate the pressure by carefully removing the hose.
–  Remove the windscreen/headlight washer tank. → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.92
–  Free the following components from their fastenings:
t  the hose from the throttle valve drive unit to the activated charcoal filter system
t  the vacuum hose from the brake servo to the intake manifold
t  the coolant temperature sender connector and the oil pressure switch
t  the multiple connectors and the engines revs sender connector, located below the thermostat housing
t  the ignition transformer connector and hall sender connector
t  the front lambda probe connector (at the front engine unit support unit)
t  the alternator connectors
t  the reversing light connector
t  the earth wire of the bolt that fixes the gearbox to the engine
t  the connectors and the gearbox wiring harness
t  the road speed sender connector
t  the starter motor connectors
t  the double knock sensor connector (engine block, rear)
t  the rear lambda probe connector
–  Remove the soundproofing sump: → Bodywork - fitting work; Rep. Gr.50
–  Remove the Poly-V belt → Chapter.
–  Unbolt the fastening clips of the power steering pressure line.

–  Loosen the securing bolts on the power steering vane pump pulley. To do so use countersupport -U-40011-.
–  Remove the power steering vane pump and secure it to the engine unit carrier; the hoses remain attached: → Running gear; Rep. Gr.48
Vehicles with air conditioning
–  Partially remove the AC compressor. → Bear in mind the additional instructions and the fitting work → Chapter
Continue for all vehicles
–  Unbolt the fastening clamp of the alternator wiring harness.
–  Unclip the guide bar for the alternator wiring harness, from the underside of the engine sump, and remove it.
–  Remove the front exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifold → Chapter.

–  Remove the lower bolt from the gearbox support -arrow-.
–  Remove the articulated half shafts from the gearbox and hang up → Running gear; Rep. Gr.40
–  Discharge the coolant → Chapter.
–  Loosen the strip clamps and remove the coolant hoses from the thermostat housing.
–  Detach the accelerator drive cable: → 5-speed manual gearbox 085; Rep. Gr.30
–  Remove the gear shift control from the gearbox: → 5-speed manual gearbox; Rep. Gr.34
–  Detach all wiring necessary and leave it out in the open.

–  Attach lifting hook -U-30034- as described below and lift slightly with the shop lift:
Pulley side: 2nd drilled flange hole in position 1
Engine flywheel side: 1st drilled flange hole in position 3
  Note!
t  Numbered positions 1 and 2 on the lifting bar point towards the pulley.
t  The holes on the drilled flanges are counted from the hook.

–  Remove the engine unit support unit. To do so remove the bolts -arrows-

–  Loosen the bolts that hold the engine unit to engine and gearbox supports -arrows-.
–  Turn the unit slightly to the left (engine towards the front, gearbox towards the rear) and remove the engine unit lifting it carefully.
  Note!
The engine unit should be handled carefully upon removal, to avoid damage to the bodywork.
