Test functioning and voltage supply
Test functioning and voltage supply
–  Fold the rear seat forward (Kombi).
–  Remove the cover from the fuel supply unit (Kombi).
–  Switch on the ignition briefly. You should hear the fuel pump running briefly (allow at least 10 seconds before repeating the test).
  Note!
On commercial vehicles the pump is harder to hear.
–  Switch off the ignition.
If the fuel pump does not come on:
–  Remove the cover from the fuse box.

–  Remove fuse no. 18 from the fuse box.
–  Connect remote control -V.A.G 1348/3A- with adaptor lead -SAT 1348/3-3- to contact 18b towards the fuel pump and to the positive (+) battery terminal.
–  Operate the remote control.
The fuel pump works:
–  Test the excitation of the fuel pump relay following the wiring diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
The fuel pump does not work:
  E20-0072
–  On commercial vehicles, remove the cover from the fuel supply unit. To do so, see process on → Anchor beachten.
–  Unplug the 4-pin terminal connector at the fuel supply unit flange -arrow-.
  E20-0073
–  Connect diode lamp -V.A.G 1527B- with auxiliary leads -V.A.G 1594A- or -V.A.G 1594C- to the exterior contacts of the connector.
–  Operate the remote control. The diode lamp should light up.
The diode lamp does not light up:
–  Find and eliminate the open circuit following the wiring diagram: → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
The diode lamp lights up (voltage supply OK):
  E20-0029
–  Remove the connector nut with spanner -U-40055A-.
–  Check that the wires between the flange and the fuel pump are connected.
If no open circuit is found in the wiring:
–  Fuel pump faulty, replace the fuel supply unit → Chapter; Fuel supply unit: removing and fitting.
