t  Hand drill with plastic brush
t  Flat scraper

t  Silicon based sealant D 176 404 A2 → ETKA (electronic parts catalogue)
Removing
  W00-2980
–  Remove the lower engine protection → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. Gr.50.
–  Drain engine oil.
–  Remove the front exhaust tube from the exhaust manifold → Chapter.
–  Unscrew the bolts fixing sump to gearbox → Item.
BXW engines
  E10-0086
–  Unscrew the bolts -arrows- and remove the cover plate from the gearbox housing.
All vehicles (continued)
–  Remove bolts fixing oil sump with liquid seal → Item
–  Remove oil sump. It may be necessary to release sump by tapping lightly with a rubber head hammer.
–  Remove sealant residue on cylinder block with a flat scraper.

–  Remove the sealant residues at the oil sump using a rotating brush, e.g. a hand drill machine with plastic brush (wear protective goggles).
–  Clean contact surfaces, which should be free of oil and grease.
Fitting
  Note
t  Observe use-by date of sealant.
t  The oil sump must be installed within 5 minutes after applying the silicone sealant.
t  To help when fitting the oil sump, threaded pins M6 may be inserted in two points in the cylinder block flange.

–  Cut off tube nozzle at upper marking (nozzle approx. about 3 mm).
–  Apply the silicone-base sealant to the clean surface of the oil sump, proceeding as shown. Sealing compound bead must be:
t  2...3 mm thick
t  pass next to the bolt holes, through the inner side -arrows-.
  Note
The sealing compound bead must not be thicker, otherwise excessive sealing compound could enter the sump and block the oil suction pipe strainer.
–  Fit the oil sump immediately tightening lightly all of the attachment bolts.
–  Tighten the bolts on the sump. → Item
–  Tighten the bolts fixing the sump to the gearbox → Item
–  Put the front exhaust tube on the exhaust manifold → Chapter.
  Note
After installing the oil sump, the sealant must dry for approx. 30 minutes. After this time has passed, the engine oil may be filled.
