Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Spanner -3122B-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Compression tester -VAG 1763-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Extraction tool -T40039-, see equivalent → Anchor

Test requirements
l  Engine oil temperature: minimum 30 ℃
l  Battery voltage: minimum 12.5 V
Operation process
   
–  Release quick fasteners -arrows- and remove engine cover panel.
  E10-10065
–  Unplug electrical connectors -2- on injectors.
  Note
Disregard -item 1- and -item 3-.
  A24-0501
–  Unscrew the earth wire -2-.
–  Unplug the electrical connectors -3- and move wiring clear.
–  Pull out ignition coils -1-.
  Note
  A15-0574
Remove ignition coils using the extractor -T40039-.
–  Unscrew the spark plugs using spark plug spanner -3122B-.
–  Check compression with the compression tester -VAG 1763-.
  Note
Handling the test equipment → instructions for use
–  Have a 2nd mechanic press down the accelerator pedal completely and simultaneously operate the starter until the pressure no longer increases on the tester display.

–  Fit spark plugs and ignition coils.
  Note
Renew gaskets for ignition coils if damaged.
–  As a final step, interrogate and erase engine control unit fault memory, as unplugging the connectors causes faults to be stored → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051.
