Removing, installing and tensioning toothed belts
t  Removing → Anchor.
t  Fit (set control times) → Anchor.
Consult the equivalence table for tools and equipment according to applicability among Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter.

Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Double pivot wrench -3387-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Hose clamp -T10008-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.
t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1332-, see equivalent → Anchor.

Removing

–  Release quick fasteners -arrows- and remove engine cover panel.
–  Place the lock carrier plate into service position → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.50
  Note
Before removing the Poly-V belt, mark the direction of rotation using chalk or a marker. If the belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause breakage.
  E10-10065
–  Loosen the V-ribbed belt by turning the tightening mechanism in the direction of the-arrow-.
–  Take off poly V-belt.
  A13-0083
–  Unscrews the screws -arrows- and the tension element of the V-ribbed belt.
–  Remove upper notched belt guard.
  Caution
The engine must only be rotated by turning the crankshaft in the normal rotation direction (clockwise).
–  Rotate crankshaft to TDC by turning bolt for toothed belt sprocket.
  A13-0408
l  Marking on camshaft sprocket and marking on crankshaft must be aligned to TDC -arrows-.
  A15-0024
–  Unscrew the vibration damper.
  A13-0356
–  Remove toothed belt cover (centre and bottom) -arrows-.
  Caution
t  The tensioning device of the toothed belt is provided with an oil pressure damper and can only be compressed with pressure slowly and equally.
t  This can be damaged if excessive force is applied when compressing the tensioning device of the notched belt.
  A13-0409
–  Press the tensioning device of the toothed belt together using an Allen key in a clockwise direction (-in the direction of the arrow-) not using too much force, until the piston of the tensioner can be engaged with the counterhold -T10008-.
–  Positioncounter holder -T10008- and leave adjoining.
  Note
  A13-0413
The protruding impact -A- of the eccentric adjuster should bit be bent.
–  To slacken toothed belt, loosen nut -1- on tensioning roller and turn eccentric adjuster clockwise -arrow- using 2-hole pin wrench -3387-.
–  Mark the notched belt direction of rotation with chalk or felt pen.
–  Take off notched belt.
Fitting (adjusting the valve timing)
  Note
t  Also for repair work that only involves extracting the camshaft sprocket, the toothed belt must be adjusted as described below.
t  When turning camshaft, none of the crankshaft cylinders should be at TDC, Risk of damage to valves and piston heads.
–  Place notched belt on crankshaft sprocket (observe direction of rotation).
–  Install lower notched belt guard.
  Note
  A13-0430
Vibration damper / crankshaft pulley fitting is only possible in one position. Hole -Arrow- in vibration damper must be positioned over raised section of crankshaft toothed belt sprocket
–  Fix the damper/pulley, observing the fastening point -arrow-.
  A13-0134
–  Align the markings on the camshaft sprocket to the markings on the cylinder head and the markings on the vibration damper to the markings on the toothed belt guard -Arrows-.
–  Check that the tensioner of the toothed belt is still engaged with the retaining tool -T10008-.
–  Fit toothed belt onto coolant pump, then tensioning roller, and finally camshaft sprocket.
  A15-0024
Tensioning toothed belt
  Note
The protruding impact -A- of the eccentric adjuster should bit be bent.
–  Turn eccentric adjuster anti-clockwise onto stop in direction of -arrow- using 2-hole pin wrench -3387-.
–  Keep the eccentric adjuster in this position and remove using the counterhold -T10008-.
  A13-0428
–  Turn eccentric adjuster clockwise in direction of -arrow- until gauge -2- with dimension -a- = 8 mm (e.g. drill bit) can be pulled through between tensioning lever and housing of tensioner.
–  Hold eccentric adjuster in this position and tighten nut -1- of tensioning roller to 27 Nm.
  Caution
The engine must only be rotated by turning the crankshaft in the normal rotation direction (clockwise).
  A13-0429
–  Turn crankshaft two rotations via toothed belt sprocket bolt until it is positioned at TDC again.
l  The marks on the camshaft sprocket and crankshaft must be at TDC -arrows-.
  A15-0024
–  Use gauge -2- (e.g. drill bit) to check dimension -a- between tensioning lever and housing of tensioner.
l  Dimension -a- = 6 ... 10 mm
  A13-0429
If dimension -a- is not attained:
  Caution
t  The tensioning device of the toothed belt is provided with an oil pressure damper and can only be compressed with pressure slowly and equally.
t  This can be damaged if excessive force is applied when compressing the tensioning device of the notched belt.
–  Press the tensioning device of the toothed belt together using an Allen key in a clockwise direction (-in the direction of the arrow-) not using too much force, until the piston of the tensioner can be engaged with the counterhold -T10008-.
  A13-0413
–  Loosen nut -1- for tensioning roller.
–  Tension toothed belt → Anchor.
If distance -A- is attained:
–  Install centre upper toothed belt guard.
The remaining installation steps are carried out in reverse sequence - note the following points:
  A13-0430
–  Install Poly V-belt tension device -arrows-.
–  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.
–  Install top section of toothed belt cover making sure it engages securely on centre section of toothed belt cover in the process.
–  Assemble the lock carrier with attachments → Bodywork - Exterior assembly work ; Rep. gr.50.
  A13-0408
–  The torque reaction support must set itself on its rubber stop by means of its self weight, then tighten the nuts -arrows-.
Tightening torque → Chapter „Assembly mountings - exploded view“
–  Fit the front bumper trim → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.63.
–  Check headlight adjustment → Booklet301.
