Valve control: Assembly overview
1 - 65 Nm
q   To loosen and tighten use counter holder -3036-, see equivalent → Anchor.
2 - Cogwheel for timing belt
q   Note the fitting position: The narrow stay on the camshaft gear points toward front and the TDC marking on the cylinder 1 is visible from the front → Anchor.
3 - Oil seal for exhaust camshaft
q   replace → Chapter
4 - Cylinder head
q   See note → Chapter
q   Checking valve guides → Chapter
q   Valve seats: reworking → Chapter
q   Dowel sleeves for bearing caps must be positioned in cylinder head
q   Before fitting, apply sealant at sealing points → Fig. and → Fig.
5 - Valve guide
q   check → Chapter
6 - Valve stem seal
q   replace → Chapter
7 - Valve spring
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
8 - Valve plate spring
9 - Woodruff keys
10 - Hydraulic followers:
q   check → Chapter
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Do not exchange position
q   Set down with cam bearing surface facing downwards.
q   Before installing, check camshaft axial clearance → Chapter
q   Lubricate contact surface
11 - Supply camshaft
q   Check radial clearance with Plastigage (bucket tappets removed)
q   Radial play; wear limit: 0.1 mm
q   out-of-true: Max. 0.035 mm
q   check the axial play → Chapter
q   Camshaft: removing and fitting → Chapter
12 - Bearing cap for inlet camshaft
q   Must sit on dowel sleeves
q   The dowel sleeves must sit in the cylinder head
q   Note fitting position:
q   Dismantling and assembling procedure → Anchor
13 - Double bearing cap
q   Must sit on dowel sleeves
q   The dowel sleeves must sit in the cylinder head
q   Before installing, apply small quantity of sealant to sealing surface
q   Sealing points between double bearing cap/cylinder head → Fig.
14 - Exhaust camshaft
q   Check radial clearance with Plastigage (bucket tappets removed)
q   Radial play; wear limit: 0.1 mm
q   out-of-true: Max. 0.035 mm
q   check the axial play → Chapter
q   Camshaft: removing and fitting → Chapter
15 - Bearing cap for exhaust camshaft
q   Must sit on dowel sleeves
q   The dowel sleeves must sit in the cylinder head
q   Note fitting position:
q   Dismantling and assembling procedure → Anchor
16 - 10 Nm
17 - 10 Nm
18 - Drive chain
q   Check for wear
q   Removing and installing → Chapter „Camshafts and camshaft adjuster: Removing and installing“
q   Mark installation position prior to removal if old drive chain is to be reused → Anchor
19 - Camshaft adjuster
q   With inlet camshaft control valve 1 -N205-
q   Before removing, lock in place using holder for chain tensioner -3366-, see equivalent → Anchor
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
q   Sealing points between camshaft adjuster and cylinder head → Fig.
q   Checking variable valve timing in „Guided Fault Finding“ → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051
20 - Bonded rubber gasket
q   Apply sealant before installing → Anchor
21 - Seal
q   replace
22 - Outlet valve
q   Sodium-filled
q   Note safety requirements when disposing of valves with sodium filling → Chapter
q   Not to be reworked, only grinding in is permissible
q   Valve dimensions → Chapter
q   Checking valve guides → Chapter

23 - Inlet valve
q   Not to be reworked, only grinding in is permissible

25 - Rotor for Hall sender
q   Note the fitting position: Insert the protrusion in the section of the camshaft
