Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Extractor -3240-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1601-, see equivalent → Anchor.
t  Inlay tool -T10417-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Adapter -3161-, see equivalent → Anchor

   
t  Hose clamp -3415-, see equivalent → Anchor
removing
–  Separate the under body protection.
–  Remove inner front right wheel housing moulding → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. gr.66
–  Remove poly V-belt → Chapter.
–  Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to TDC cylinder 1 → Chapter.

–  Loosen the pulley securing bolt. Immobilise the pulley with the retaining tool -3415- and the counterhold -3415/2-.

–  Move the extension -3161- in the seal extractor -3240-.
–  Remove the interior section of the seal extractor -3240- up to the the start of the thread with a knurled screw.

–  Lubricate threaded head of oil seal extractor, place it in position and, exerting firm pressure, screw it into oil seal as far as possible.
–  Slacken off the knurled screw and turn the inner part- in the direction of the arrow- against the crankshaft until the oil seal has been extracted.
installing
  Note

Do not lubricate sealing lip and outer rim of oil seal before pressing in.
–  Place the guide sleeve -T10417/1- on the crankshaft journal and slide the oil seal along the bushing.
–  Remove the guide sleeve -T10417/1- from the crankshaft journal.

–  Tap-in the sealing ring into the end point of the control housing with the assembly device -T10417- using an equal hammer force.
–  Install crankshaft belt pulley → Chapter.
Further assembly is basically the reverse of the dismantling sequence.
