  Note
The mounting points for securing the camshaft clamp were modified. A new special tool has been introduced described as camshaft fastener -T10171A-. The former camshaft fastener -T10171- used until now may still be used if it is modified according to the following description.

–  Place the template -1- on the camshaft fastener -T10171A- as shown in the figure.
–  Mark the camshaft fastener -T10171- with a notch at the mark -2-.
–  Drill the camshaft fastener -T10171- using a 7 mm drill bit.
–  Deburr hole on both sides.
–  For tool number -T10171-, add an -A-.
Checking sequence
–  Remove the cylinder 1 spark plug. To do so, use the extractor -T10094A- and the wrench -3122B- → Chapter.
  N15-10368
–  Release connector -2- and pull off.
–  Remove oil pressure switch -F1--1-.
  N15-10696
–  Tighten the adjustment tool -T10170- as far as possible on the thread of the spark plug.
–  Insert the gauge -VAS 6079- with the extension of the adapter for the gauge -T10170- as far as it will go and immobilise with the clamping nut -arrow-.
–  Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to TDC cylinder 1 . Observe the position of the small pointer of the gauge.
  N15-10226
–  Remove the coolant hose from the hose clip -arrow-.
–  Unscrew the securing screws and remove the sealing cover of the camshaft -1-.
  N15-10225
The openings -arrows- of the camshafts should be in the positions shown. Where necessary, turn the crankshaft one turn (360°).
  Note
t  When the crankshaft rotates more than 0.01 mm beyond the TDC, the crankshaft must be rotated by approx. 45° against the direction of the engine again. Then turn crankshaft in direction of engine rotation to TDC No. 1 cylinder.
t  Permissible deviation from TDC cylinder 1: ± 0.01 mm
  N15-0657
–  Fit the adjustment tool -T10171A- as far as possible into the openings of the camshaft.
Locking pins -arrows 1- must engage in holes -arrows 2-. Inscription „TOP“-arrow 3- must be readable from above.
If the adjustment tool -T10171A- can not be fitted to the end in the openings in the camshaft, the distribution timing is incorrect and should be adjusted → Chapter.
If the adjustment tool -T10171A- can be fitted to the end in the openings in the camshaft, the distribution timing is correct.
Install in reverse order to dismantling, noting the following:
t  Replace the seals of the camshaft covers and lubricate with oil before assembly.
