Fuel tank breather: verification
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390-
  W00-2716
t  Vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368-
Test conditions
l  Ignition OFF
Active carbon filter system: verification
  W00-0567
–  Detach breather tube -1- from active carbon filter solenoid valve -2-.
–  Connect the manual pump -SAT 1390- to the flexible tube -1-.
–  Remove the breather tube -3- active carbon filter -4- and connect the vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- -connection A-.
–  Connect the vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- -connection B- to the existing connection on the active carbon filter.
–  Set vacuum tester to position -B-.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390- several times. Vacuum must not build up.
If vacuum builds up:
–  Check the breather tube -5- of the active carbon filter -4- for dirt; if necessary clean it.
Tube to the fuel tank and cover: verification

–  Extract from the active carbon filter -2- the flexible breather tube -1- for the fuel tank.
–  Connect the manual vacuum pump -SAT 1390- and the vacuum tester -V.A.G 1368- to the flexible tube -1- as indicated in the diagram.
–  Set vacuum tester to -A/B- position.
–  Remove fuel filler cap.
–  Operate hand vacuum pump -SAT 1390- several times. Vacuum must not build up.
If vacuum builds up:
–  Verify the operation of the gravitation/overfill valve → Item.
–  Then check the tube -1- from fuel tank for blockage.
If vacuum does not build up:
–  Fit the fuel filler cap.
–  Operate the vacuum pump a few more times. No vacuum should build up.
  Note
If the fuel level in the tank is low, the vacuum pump must be operated approx. 20 to 30 times.
If vacuum builds up:
–  Replace the fuel filler cap.
