Draining off
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Open filler cap from expansion tank.
–  Remove engine splash guard.

–  Release spring-type clip unit and pull coolant hose off -2-.
Disregard item -1-.
  Note
Please observe requirements for disposal.
Filling
  Caution
Only distilled water may be mixed with G12 plus-plus. The use of distilled water ensures optimum protection against corrosion.
  Note
t  In vehicles as of model year 2008, only G 12 plus-plus according to TL VW 774 G may be used as coolant additive.
t  For vehicles up to and including model year 2007 coolant additive G 12 plus according to TL VW 774 F and G 12 plus-plus according to TL VW 774 G can be used.
t  It is only permissible to use distilled water for mixing.
t  The coolant additive G 12 plus-plus can be mixed with the previous coolant additive G 12 plus. Identification: both are coloured purple.
t  Coolant additives marked conforming to „TL VW 774 G“ or conforming to „TL VW 774 F“ prevent frost and corrosion damage, scaling and also raise boiling point of coolant. For these reasons, the cooling system must be filled all-year-round with a coolant and corrosion protection additives.
t  Thanks to this rise in the boiling point, the coolant guarantees good running, even when the engine undergoes heavy strain, especially in countries with tropical climates.
t  The antifreeze protection must be guaranteed to approx. - 25 ºC (down to approx. -35 ℃ in countries with arctic climate).
t  The coolant concentration must not be reduced by adding distilled water even in the warm season or in hot countries. The amount of anti-freeze in the coolant must be at least 40 %.
t  If the climate requires a stronger anti-freeze, the anti-freeze agent can be increased, but only up to 60% (anti-freeze protection down to approx. -40ºC). If the proportion is greater, the cooling and anti-freeze protection capacity is reduced.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket has been replaced, do not reuse old coolant.

–  Push coolant hose -2- together with spring-type clip onto connection.
Disregard item -1-.
–  Install engine splash guard.
With cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096-
–  Fill the coolant circuit using the filling equipment-VAS 6096-: → Instructions for handling the cooling system filling equipment VAS 6096
Without cooling system filler -VAS 6096-:
  N19-10240
–  Fill with coolant up to max. mark on expansion tank.
With or without cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096-
–  Close expansion tank.
–  Turn off heater controls.
Vehicles with no auxiliary heater
–  Start engine and maintain engine speed at approx. 2,000 rpm for approx. 3 minutes.
–  Run engine until radiator fan -V7- cuts in.
Vehicles with auxiliary heater
  Caution
Do not switch auxiliary heater on until the cooling circuit has been filled as subsequently described.
  N19-0347
–  Connect vehicle diagnosis, testing and information system -VAS 5051B- as follows:
–  Connect diagnosis cable connector to diagnostic connection in driver footwell.
–  Start engine and maintain engine speed at approx. 2,000 rpm for approx. 3 minutes.
–  Press buttons on display for „Vehicle self-diagnosis“, „18 - Auxiliary heater“ and „03 - Final control diagnosis“ one after the other.
–  Press right arrow button on display up to final control diagnosis for heater coolant shut-off valve -N279-.
–  Initiate final control diagnosis for heater coolant shut-off valve -N279-. Keep engine speed at approx. 2,000 rpm for about 1 minute.
–  Run engine until radiator fan -V7- cuts in.
All other vehicles continued
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Wear eye protection and protective clothing to avoid eye injuries and scalding. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. If the engine is at running temperature, the coolant level should be at MAX; if the engine is cold, between the MIN and MAX marks.
