Support elements with hydraulic compensation: verification
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Calibre
Checking sequence
  Note
t  Support elements with hydraulic compensation can not be repaired.
t  Irregular valve noise during starting is normal.
–  Start engine and run until radiator fan has started up once.
–  Increase engine speed to about 2500 rpm for 2 minutes; perform road test if necessary.
If the hydraulic compensation elements are still noisy, determine the defective element as follows:
–  Remove cylinder head cover.

–  Rotate the crankshaft so that the cams of the followers to be verified are up:
–  Press roller rocker finger with screwdriver downwards -arrow-.
If an 0.20 mm feeler gauge can be inserted between camshaft and roller rocker finger:
–  Renew the support elements. Remove camshaft for this purpose → Chapter.
  Note
t  After installing cam shaft, the engine must not be started for approx. 30 minutes. The hydraulic elements should be allowed to sit in place (if not, the valves may press on the cylinder).
t  After working on the valve gear, turn the engine carefully at least 2 rotations to ensure that none of the valves make contact when the starter is operated.
