  Note!
t  Cylinder heads which have cracks between the valve seats or between valve seat inserts and the spark plug thread can be used further without reducing service life, provided the cracks do not exceed a maximum of 0.3 mm in width, or when no more than the first four spark plug threads are cracked.
t  After fitting the camshaft, the engine should not be started for at least 30 min. The hydraulic compensation parts have to settle (otherwise the valves would hit the pistons).
t  After working on the valve gear, turn the engine carefully at least two turns to ensure that no valve will be stuck when the engine is started.
t  Always replace seals and gaskets.
1 - 100 Nm
q   Use tool -T20018A- to loosen and tighten
2 - Cogwheel for camshaft
q   With obturation ring for the hall sender -G40-
3 - Oil seal for the camshaft
q   Do not oil sealing lip of oil seal
q   Replace → Chapter
4 - Pin
q   Ensure tight fit
q   Ensure correct seating
5 - 20 Nm
6 - Bearing cap
q   Note installation position → Fig.
q   Use a little bit of sealant -D 454 300 A2- on the contact surface before fitting
7 - Cam shaft
q   Check axial play → Fig.
q   Removing and fitting → Chapter
q   Check the radial play using Plastigage, wear limit: 0.1 mm
q   Off centre: max. 0.05 mm
8 - Hydraulic cam follower
q   Do not interchange
q   With hydraulic valve clearance compensation
q   Verification → Chapter
q   Place with contact surface downwards
q   Oil sliding surface
9 - Valve cotters
10 - Valve spring plate
11 - Valve spring
q   Removing and installing:
q   Cylinder head fitted → Chapter
q   Cylinder head removed: use the valve installation tool -T20034/1-
12 - Rod seal for the valve
q   Replace → Chapter
13 - Valve guide
q   Verification → Chapter
q   Replace → Chapter
14 - Cylinder head
q   Removing and fitting → Chapter
q   Rework valve seats → Chapter
q   Check valve guides → Chapter
15 - Valve
q   Do not rework, only grinding is permitted
q   Valve dimensions → Fig.
q   Check valve guides → Chapter
q   Rework valve seats → Chapter

   
Cam shaft: verification
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Bracket -T20020-
t  Dial gauge
Carry out the measurement with the hydraulic followers removed and with the first and last bearing caps in place.
Wear limit: maximum 0.15 mm.
