Fitting
Fitting
  Note!
t  Note the use by date of the sealant.
t  Replace the gaskets.
t  The sump must be fitted within 5 minutes of applying the silicone sealing compound.

–  Cut off tube nozzle at forward marking (nozzle diameter approx. 3 mm).
–  Apply silicone sealant compound, as shown, to clean sump sealing surface. Sealing compound bead must be:
t  2 … 3 mm
t  Run the bead on the inside of bolt holes -arrows-
  Note!
The sealing compound bead must not be more than 3 mm thick, otherwise excess sealing compound could enter the sump and block the oil suction pipe strainer.
  N17-0019
–  Apply silicone sealing compound to a clean sump sealing surface, as shown in the illustration.
  Note!
In the area of the rear sealing flange, take special care applying the bead of sealer -arrows-.
–  Fit the sump immediately and tighten all sump bolts in the indicated order:
  A17-0041
–  Pre-tighten the bolts -1--20- crossways to a torque of 5 Nm.
–  Tighten sump/gearbox bolts -arrows- to 45 Nm
–  Tighten the bolts -1--20- crossways to a torque of 15 Nm.
  Note!
t  On fitting the sump on a dismantled engine see that it is flush with the cylinder block at the flywheel end.
t  Sealant must be left to dry for approx. 30 minutes after fitting the sump. Only then can the engine be filled with oil.
t  When engine oil is drained and is not extracted with the used oil vacuum device, the gasket ring of the oil drain plug has to be replaced to avoid leaks.
t  Observe disposal regulations!
Vehicles fitted with metallic oil sump protection
  Note!
t  Before fitting the metallic protection for the oil sump, ensure the good condition of the rubber caps for the insertion of the elastic rivets into the engine block.
t  Use sealant for fitting the metallic protection for the oil sump attachment bolts.
  E17-0033
–  Fit the metallic protection -1- and tighten the bolts -2- to a torque of 37 Nm.
Continue for all vehicles
After filling the engine with oil, the following has to be taken into account when first starting the engine:
  Note!
t  While the oil pressure warning lamp on dash display remains lit, the engine must only idle. Do not press accelerator!
t  Only when the oil warning light goes off has the oil pressure reached the minimum required and the accelerator may be pressed.
Continue fitting following the reverse order of the removal process.
