Knock sensors -G61- and -G66-: verification

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Hand multimeter -V.A.G 1526A- oder multimeter -V.A.G 1715-

t	Auxiliary measurement tool set -V.A.G 1594A- or -V.A.G 1594C-

t	Double connection engine testing unit -V.A.G 1598/31- (AZL engines) or -V.A.G 1598/22- (BBX engines)

t	Current flow diagrams

Fitting location: -G61- → Item Fitting location: -G66- → Item   Note! t  It is extremely important to keep to the tightening torque of 20 Nm to ensure the Knock sensors perform perfectly. t  Only gold-plated contacts may be used when servicing the Knock sensor connector contacts. t  Check the knock sensor connecter to the cable branch, for corrosion. Test conditions l  Fault in one or both Knock sensors recognised by self-diagnosis → Chapter, Fault memory: consulting Verification process –  Pull connector off the Knock sensor to be checked.

–  Switch multimeter -V.A.G 1526 A- to resistance measurement and connect it to contacts 1 and 2 of the Knock sensor.

–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/31- to control unit wiring harness, without connecting the engine control unit (for BBX engines use the tester -V.A.G 1598/22-) → Chapter.

–  Check the following cable connections for interruption or short circuit: Knock sensor 1 -G61- (cylinders 1/2):

–  Knock sensor 2 -G66- (cylinders 3/4):

–  If necessary, eliminate the wiring open circuit or short circuit. If no fault is found: –  Replace engine control unit: → VAS 5051; Vehicle self-diagnosis.
