Checking fuel pump delivery
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Pressure tester -VAG 1318-
t  Adapter -VAG 1318/11-
t  Adapter -VAG 1318/17-
t  Adapter -VAG 1318/23-

t  Adapter cable -SAT 1348/3-3-
t  Remote control -VAG 1348/3A-
t  Auxiliary cable kit -VAG 1594C-
t  Fuel-resistant measuring container

Test conditions
l  Battery voltage at least 12.5 V
l  Fuel filter is in good condition
l  Fuel tank at least. 1/4 full.
l  Fuel pump control unit -J538- in good condition; check → Chapter
l  Ignition off.
Checking sequence
–  Remove rear right seat → general body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.72.
–  Lift carpet under the seats and fold backwards.

–  Release retainers -arrows- at cover for sealing flange.
  A20-1066
–  Release carefully electrical connection -arrow- on sealing flange and take off.
  A20-1067
–  Connect the remote control -VAG 1348/3A- with the adapter cable -SAT 1348/3-3- to the contact -1-. Use the auxiliary measurement set -VAG 1594C- as an aid for this purpose.
–  Join contact -5- to the bodywork earth using a cable from the auxiliary measurement set -VAG 1594C-.
–  Connect crocodile clip of adaptor cable -SAT 1348/3-3- to vehicle battery (+).
–  Remove filler cap from fuel tank filler neck.
  WARNING
Fuel system is under pressure! Before opening the system place a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling fuel hose from connection. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury and contact with skin.
  E20-10009
–  Disconnect fuel supply line -2- (by pulling release tab).
  Note
The vacuum pipe -1- remains connected.
  E10-10019
–  Screw the adapter -VAG 1318/23- and the adapter -V.A.G 1318/17-1- on to the pressure tester -VAG 1318-.
–  Fit the adapter -V.A.G 1318/17-1- to the disconnected fuel supply line.
–  Screw the adapter -V.A.G 1318/11- on to the pressure tester -VAG 1318-. Connect the auxiliary hose -arrow- and insert the other end in a measurement container.
–  Open cut-off valve on pressure tester. The lever indicates the direction of flow.
–  Build up pressure in the fuel system; to do so, press the remote control switch and gradually close the pressure gauge shut-off tap, until it indicates:.
l  Specification: approx. 4 bar
–  From this point on do not move position of cut-off tap.
–  Drain measuring container.
–  Press remote control switch for 15 seconds.
  A20-1122
–  Compare amount of fuel delivered with minimum delivery shown in diagram (cm3/15 sec.).
  Note
Voltage at fuel pump with engine stationary and pump running is approx. 2 volts less than battery voltage.
If the minimum flow rate of supply is not reached, this may be due to any of the following problems:
t  Choked fuel lines.
t  Blocked fuel filter.
t  Fuel pump is defective.
Continue the installation in the reverse order of removal sequence, observing the following:
–  Fit rear seat → bodywork - interior fitting work; Rep. gr.72.
