Wiring and component check with test box -VAG 1598/42-
  Note
t  The test box has 105 pins. The connection cable can be disconnected from the test box. This means that, if in the future the connectors of the control unit change, only the cable needs to be changed and not the test box.

t  The smaller of the two connectors in the engine control unit has terminals 1 to 60. The larger of the two connectors has terminals 1 to 94.
t  If a connection wired to the engine control unit needs to be tested, first check on the circuit diagram to see to which connector the connected cable leads to in the engine control unit. If the cable leads to the 60-pin connector, connect the smaller of the two connectors from the adapter -VAG 1598/39-1- to the entrance „A“ of the test box -VAG 1598/42- and measure to the corresponding contact.

t  If, according to the circuit diagram, the cable leads to the 94-pin connector, connect the larger of the two connectors of the adapter -VAG 1598/39-2- as shown below. The connector marked with „A“ should be connected to entrance „A“ of the test box -VAG 1598/42- and connector „B“ to entrance „B“ of thetest box -VAG 1598/42-.
t  The test box -VAG 1598/42- is designed so it can be connected both to the wiring harness for the engine control unit and to the engine control unit itself at the same time.
t  This has the advantage that, when the test box is connected, the electronic engine control remains totally operative (for example, measurement of signals with the engine running).
t  If the engine control unit should also be connected to the test box, this is indicated in the corresponding test cycles.
  WARNING
Before connecting the measuring cables, select the appropriate measurement field and follow the test procedures to avoid damaging electronic components.
–  Connect test box -VAG 1598/42- to wiring harness connectors. The earth lead from the test box should be connected to the battery negative. If the engine control unit should also be connected to the test box, this is indicated in the corresponding test cycles.
–  Carry out the verification as described in the corresponding repair process.
After reconnecting the engine control unit, perform the following operations:
–  Interrogating and erasing fault memory if necessary → Chapter.
