Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Plastic or wooden wedge
t  Feeler gauge
  Note
t  The hydraulic cam followers may not be repaired.
t  Irregular valve noise during starting is normal.
Checking sequence
–  Start the engine and leave it run until the temperature of the cooling liquid has reached about 80 °C.
–  Increase the engine speed to about 2,500 rpm over a period of 2 minutes.
If the hydraulic cam followers continue to make noise, find the faulty follower in the following way:
–  Remove cylinder head cover → Chapter.
–  Rotate the crankshaft so that the cams of the followers to be verified are up:
–  Push the vehicle with the fourth gear engaged, with the ignition off.

Determine clearance between cam and bucket tappet.
–  Press the followers upwards using the plastic or wood wedge. If a feeler gauge of 0.20 mm can be inserted between camshaft and bucket tappet, replace tappet.
–  Replacing the tappet → Chapter.
  Note
After fitting the camshaft, the engine should not be started for approx. 30 minutes. The hydraulic elements should be allowed to sit in place (if not, the valves may press on the cylinder).
