Safety precautions
Safety precautions
When working on the fuel system, take note of the following:
  WARNING
The hot fuel may cause burns.
t  For those vehicles fitted with an injector pump, the temperature of the fuel and the fuel lines may reach up to 100 ºC in extreme cases. Before opening the duct connections, allow the fuel to cool otherwise there is a risk of severe burns.
t  Wear protection gloves.
t  Wear eye protection.
Injury risk! The fuel is subject to pressure!
t  Before opening the fuel system, place a clean cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully loosening the connection.
t  Wear protection gloves.
t  Wear eye protection.
To avoid personal injury and damage in the preheating and injection system, take note of the following:
t  The electrical wiring of the preheating and injection system (including the tester units) should be connected and disconnected only with the ignition switched off.
t  Wash the engine only if the ignition is switched off.
t  Upon disconnecting electrical connectors faults are registered in the engine control unit:
–  Before removal, read out the event memories in all control units → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051; Guided fault finding; Vehicle systems test or even VAS 5052; Vehicle self-diagnosis.
  Caution
Danger of electronic components fault upon disconnecting battery.
t  Follow the adapted methods before disconnecting the battery.
t  Disconnect the battery only with the ignition switched off.
–  Disconnect battery . → Rep. gr.27
When working on the coolant system take note of the following:
  WARNING
Hot coolant and vapours can cause burns!
t  When the engine is hot the cooling system is under pressure.
t  To reduce the system charge pressure, cover the expansion tank plug with a rag and open carefully.
If in the test drives it is necessary to use the tester units, take note of the following:
  WARNING
Risk of suffering an accident due to distraction and for not sufficiently tying down the tester units.
Driver airbag activation danger in case of accident.
l  Operating tester units whilst driving distracts your attention.
l  High risk of injury with loose test units.
The test units should be tied down to the rear seat with a belt and operated from said seat by a second person.
