  Note!
t  A 5-digit code must always be displayed during the control unit identification.
t  The control unit must be recoded if the vehicle relevant coding is not displayed or the control unit has been renewed.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
Work sequence
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551/V.A.G 1552-. Then switch ignition on and select engine control unit with the “Address code” 01. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter).
   
Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0 and 7 for the function “Code control unit” and confirm entry with Q -key.

The display shows the control unit identification and coding, e.g.:

Indicated on display when a non-authorised code number has been entered.
–  Press → -key.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q -key.
–  Switch off ignition.
  Note!
The control unit does not use the coding entered and indicated on display until the ignition has been switched off once.
Faulty coding causes the following:
t  Faulty driving performance (gear change jerks, load change jerks, etc.)
t  Increased fuel consumption
t  Increased exhaust gas emissions
t  Faults stored in fault memory which are not actually present
t  Functions will not be performed (Lambda regulation, activation of the activated charcoal filter system, etc.)
t  On vehicles with front-wheel drive the traction control system does not function (TCS warning lamp lights up)
t  Reduced gearbox life
