Final control diagnosis carrying out
The final control diagnosis activates the following components in the stated sequence:
1. Throttle valve positioner -V60-
2. Activated charcoal filter solenoid valve 1 -N80-
3. EGR valve -N18-
4. Engine speed signal → Note
5. Fuel pump relay -J17-
6. Engine/air conditioner compressor electrical connection → Note
1)  Ignore.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/31-
t  Hand multimeteR -V.A.G 1526 A- or multimeter -V.A.G 1715-
t  Diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B-
t  Adapter set -V.A.G 1594 C-
t  Current flow diagram
Check conditions
   
l  Fuses no. 15,18, 20 and 21, OK.
l  Battery voltage at least 11.5 V.
l  All electric consumers, eg: lights and rear window heater must be switched off.
l  Throttle valve potentiometer -G69- OK.
Test requirements for vehicles with air conditioning system
l  Vehicle at room temperature (warmer than +15 °C).
l  Air conditioning system switched on
l  Select lowest temperature and highest blower speed
  Note!
t  The final control diagnosis can only be carried out if the engine is off and ignition switched on.
t  The final control diagnosis will be broken off if the engine is started or a rotational impulse is recognised.
t  During the final control diagnosis the individual final controls will be activated until advancing to the next final control by pressing the button.
t  The final controls are checked by sound or touch.
Work sequence
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551/V.A.G 1552-. Switch ignition on and select engine control unit with the “Address code” 01. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter).

Indicated on display:
–  Operate the fault reader taking into account the reading on the display.
–  Press keys 0 and 3 for the function “Final control diagnosis”.

Indicated on display:
The positioner should open and close the throttle valve until the key is pressed to activate the next positioner.
If the throttle valve positioner does not move:
–  Check throttle valve positioner → Chapter; Throttle valve control part: checking:
–  Confirm input with Q -key.
Activating activated charcoal filter solenoid valve 1 -N80-:
–  Press -key.
 
Final control diagnosis              -> 
Throttle valve positioner-           V60
Indicated on display:
The activ. charcoal filter solenoid valve (engine comp, right side) must click until key is pressed to activate the next control element.
–  Pull hose off activated charcoal filter at solenoid valve.
–  Connect auxiliary hose to the vacant valve connection.
–  Blow into auxiliary hose during final control diagnosis (in direction of throttle valve control part). Valve must open and close
If the solenoid valve does not click:
–  Continue check → .
Activate exhaust gas recirculation valve -N18-
–  Press -key.
 
Final control diagnosis               ->
Activ.charcoal filt. solenoid valve1 N80
Indicated on display:
–  Act. charcoal filter solenoid valve (engine comp, left side) must click, until key is pressed to activate the next control element.
If the exhaust gas recirculation valve does not click:
–  Continue check → .
Displaying engine speed signal:
  Note!
This test is only possible on vehicles with revs counter. On vehicles without rev. counter switch to the next final control by pressing the key when the following message is displayed.
–  Press -key.
 
Final control diagnosis               ->
EGR valve                            N18
Indicated on display:
–  Rev. counter should show approx. 3000 rpm, until next final control element is activated by pressing the key.
If no display appears:
–  Check the wiring to rev counter. Speed signal: testing → Chapter.
Activating fuel pump relay -J17-
–  Press -key.
 
Final control diagnosis               ->
Engine speed signal                     
Indicated on display:
The fuel pump relay (on the relay plate, relay position 12) must click until the next final control is activated by pressing the key.
  Note!
During the activation of the fuel pump relay the fuel pump must be heard to run at intervals.
If the relay does not click:
–  Check fuel pump relay → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations.
Check electrical connection with air conditioning:
  Note!
The test step is only for vehicles with air conditioner. On vehicles without air conditioner end final control diagnosis by pressing key when the following message appears.
 
Final control diagnosis               ->
Fuel pump relay                      J17
Indicated on display:
The air conditioner compressor magnetic coupling must click, until ending final control diagnosis by pressing key.
If the magnetic coupling does not click:
–  Check wiring from / to air conditioner → Chapter.
If the magnetic coupling clicks:
–  Press -key.
 
Final control diagnosis               ->
Engine/AC. compr. electr. connection    
Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q -key.
–  Switch off ignition.
Continuation of check when the activated charcoal filter solenoid -1 does not click:

–  Pull the connector -1- off solenoid valve -2 -N80- and connect the diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- to the unplugged connector, using auxiliary cables -V.A.G 1594 C-.
LED flashes:
–  Proceed with final control diagnosis until completed.
–  Switch off ignition.
–  Replace solenoid valve -1--N80- → Rep. Gr.20.
LED does not flash:
–  Proceed with final control diagnosis until completed.
–  Switch off ignition.
  E24-0011
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/31- to control unit wiring harness. The engine control unit remains disconnected.
  N24-0943
–  Check wiring between test box socket 64 + 2-pin connector -2- for open circuit using current flow diagram.
   Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω
–  Check wiring additionally for short circuit to battery positive. and earth
   Specification: ∞ Ω
–  Check wire between 2-pin connector contact -1- and fuel pump relay -J17- for open circuit using current flow diagram
   Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω
If no wiring fault is detected:
–  Renew engine control unit → Chapter.
Continuation of test if the exhaust gas recirculation valve does not click:
  N24-0231
–  Unplug the 2-pin connector from the EGR valve -N18--arrow- (at camshaft housing, to left).
LED flashes:
  N01-0256
–  Connect diode test lamp -V.A.G 1527 B- to the unplugged connector, using auxiliary cables -V.A.G 1594 C-, and between contacts 1+5 check:
   The LED must flash (bright/darker)
–  Proceed with final control diagnosis until completed.
–  Switch off ignition
–  Replace exhaust gas recirculation valve -N18- → Rep. Gr.26.
LED does not flash:
–  Proceed with final control diagnosis until completed.
–  Switch off ignition
  N01-0258
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/31- to control unit wiring harness. The engine control unit remains disconnected.
  N24-0943
–  Check wiring between test box socket 114+ 6-pin connector -5- for open circuit using current flow diagram.
   Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω.
–  Check wiring additionally for short circuit to battery positive. and earth.
   Specification ∞ Ω
–  Check wire between connector -1- of 6-pin connector and fuel pump relay -J17- for open circuit using current flow diagram.
   Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω
If no wiring fault is detected:
–  Renew engine control unit → Chapter.
