Start of injection: check and adjust dynamically
Start of injection: check and adjust dynamically
  Note!
t  The dynamic checking of the beginning of injection are only possible in function 04 “Basic engine adjustment”.
t  The start of the injection should always be checked and, if necessary, adjusted after replacing the toothed belt and after loosening the bolted joints on the injection pump or the shafts of the toothed belt.
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  torque wrenches -SAT 8010-
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or Vehicle system checker -V.A.G 1552- with Cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
Conditons for checking and adjustment
l  Basic mechanical adjustment of the engine, correct.
l  Toothed belt tension, correct.
Sequence of operations
–  Connect the -V.A.G 1551- (-V.A.G 1552-), and using the corresponding “direction code” 01, select the control unit for engine electronics. When doing this, the engine must be idling: (Fault reader: Turn on and select the control unit for engine electronics → Chapter).

Indication on the display:
–  Press the keys 0 and 4 for the function “Begin basic adjustment” and confirm with Q.

–  Press three times 0 for “Indication group 0” and confirm with Q.
  
Begin the basic adjustment              
Enter value group number XXX
Indication on the display: (1 … 10 = indication fields)
–  Check the coolant temperature indicated in field 7. Value indicated between 72 … 75 corresponding to a temperature of approx. 85 °C.
Do not continue with the check until the coolant temperature has been reached.

The start of injection, indication field 2, depends on the fuel temperature, indication field 9.
A - Indication field 2, start injection
B - Indication field 9, fuel temperature
C - Tolerance margin for the start of injection
Example reading:
The numerical value 90 of indication field 9 -B-, corresponds in indication field 2 -A- to a margin of 25 … 78.
  Note!
If, when checking, it turns out that the start of injection lies within the indicated tolerance -C-, further adjustment is not necessary. After repairs, such as removal and refitting the injection pump and the adjustment of the distribution timing, the start of injection must be adjusted to the medium value (traces) of the tolerance margin -C-.
If the start of injection is off the theoretical margin, the start of the injection must be adjusted as follows:
–  Remove the upper protector of the toothed belt.

–  Remove two fixing bolts -1- of the injection pump pinion.
–  To hold the shaft of the pump, apply a ring spanner e/c 22 to the hub nut -2-.
–  Loosen the third fixing bolt of the injection pump shaft and move slightly by turning the shaft of the injection pump:
Left = later starting of injection
Right = earlier starting of injection
  Note!
The nut -2- of the hub should not be loosened in any case. Otherwise, the the basic adjustment of the injection pump would be out of phase and can not be adjusted with the means available in the workshop.
–  Tighten the same fixing bolts of the injection pump shaft.
   Torque: 25 Nm
–  Observe the value in indication field 2, and if necessary, repeat the adjustment until the value indicated remains on the mean value of the margin of theoretical values -C-.
–  Press →
–  Press the keys 0 and 6 for the function “End data transmission” and confirm withQ.
  Note!
After the dynamic adjustment of the injection pump, the injection pipes must be loosened on the side of the pump and retightened (25 Nm). In this way, tensions are eliminated and the pipes are not broken by the effect of vibrations.
–  Fit the upper protection of the toothed belt.
