Ignition timing: verification and adjustment

Special tools and workshop equipment required

t	Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-

t	Ignition tester -V.A.G 1767- or -V.A.G 1367- with trigger pincers -V.A.G 1367/8-

Test conditions

l	Engine oil temperature, 80 °C minimum

l	No faults recorded in the memory → Chapter, Fault memory: consulting

Checking process

–	Connect the ignition tester -V.A.G 1767- or the ignition tester -V.A.G 1367- with trigger pincers -V.A.G 1367/8-.

–	Connect the equipment -V.A.G 1551- (V.A.G. 1552). Start engine and select “Address code” 01 to select engine control unit. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter.)

Display indication:

–	Press keys 0 and 4 for the function “Begin basic setting” and confirm entry with the Q key.

–	Press keys 0 and 0 for “Display group number 0” and confirm entry with Q key.

Display indication:

(1…10 = indication fields)

–	The numbers that appear in the display do not have any significance for this test.

–	Check the ignition timing.

Verification value 4…8° before TDC

Using the stroboscope lamp

System in basic setting 0             ->

–	Use the hexagonal timing cover spanner -U-20020- to remove the screw cap and focus the flashing onto the notch in the engine flywheel.

–	If necessary, adjust the ignition timing rotating the ignition distribution:

Adjustment value: 6 ± 1° before TDC

–	Press the key →.

–	Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q key.
