Idle switch: verification and adjustment
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand multimeter -V.A.G 1526 A- or multimeter -V.A.G 1715-
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
t  Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594 C-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/18-
t  Electric circuits flow diagram

  Note
t  Adjustment is only necessary if the throttle actuator or the lower element of the injection unit are replaced.
t  The idle switch -F60- can only be adjusted when the throttle actuator is completely out.
Checking process
–  Connect the equipment -V.A.G 1551- (-V.A.G 1552-). Then switch ignition on and select engine control unit with the “Address code” 01. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter.)
   
Display indication:
–  Press keys 0 and 4 for the function “Begin basic setting” and confirm entry with the Q key.

–  Press keys 0 and 1 for “Display group number” and confirm entry with Q key.

(1…4 = Display fields)
–  Note the 2nd digit to the left in the indication field 4 -8 digit numeric block-.
   Indication 01000010
–  Open the throttle valve a little. The 2nd digit should jump to 0
   Indication 00000010
If the specifications are not attained:
–  Remove the air inlet duct.

Continuation of the verification in the case where the indication is always 1
   
–  Extract the connection -1- from the throttle actuator -V60--2-.
   Indication 0:
–  Replace the throttle actuator -V60-.
   Indication 1:
–  Press the key →.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q key.
–  Switch ignition off.
–  Extract the connector from the engine control unit.
–  Verify the cables to the control unit connector on the 6-pin connector, pin 5, for any short circuit to the cable contact 4 or to the vehicle earth.
If no wiring fault is detected:
–  Replace the engine control -J257- → Item
Continuation of the verification in the case where the indication is always 0
  N24-0141
–  Extract the connection -1- from the throttle actuator -V60--2-.
–  Bridge the connections 4+5 from the connector using the auxiliary cables from -V.A.G 1594 C- and note the indication in the display.
   Indication 1:
–  Replace the throttle actuator -V60-.
   Indication 0:
–  Press the key →.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q key.
–  Switch ignition off.

–  Connect the tester -V.A.G 1598/18- to the control unit cable harness.
–  Check the cables between the test box and the 6-pin connector for interruption following the current circuits diagram.

If no wiring fault is detected:
–  Replace the engine control -J257- → Item
Verification of adjustment
  Note
The adjustment of the throttle switch should be carried out in the function “04 - Adjust basic setting” -actuator all the way out-. If the adjustment of the basic setting was interrupted for cable verification, the system must be brought back to adjust basic setting, with the ignition ON.
   
Display indication:
(1…4 = Display fields)
–  Select the indication group 00. To do this
t  with the -V.A.G 1551-, press the key 1
t  with the -V.A.G 1552-, press the key ↓

Display indication:

–  Note the value indicated in the field 2 (throttle potentiometer-track 1):
   Verification value: 196…200
If the specification is not obtained:
–  Remove the air inlet duct.
–  Correct the adjustment of the limiting bolt arrow.
   Adjustment value: 198 ± 1
  Note
t  If the throttle is opened to access the bolt for adjustment, the control unit will insert the throttle actuator. In order to bring the actuator out again, the function “Adjust basic setting” must be selected.
t  Following the adjustment correction of the limiting bolt, the operation of the idle switch must be verified → Chapter
–  Press the key →.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End output” function and confirm input with the Q key.
If the adjustment to the specification is not possible:
–  Replace the lower element of the injection unit.
