Self-diagnosis characteristics
The Monomotronic injection and ignition system engine control unit -J257-is equipped with a fault memory.
When the sensors or the components that are under surveillance present any problem, this is recorded along with information about the type of problem in the fault memory.
The recorded problems may be consulted using the -V.A.G 1551- or -V.A.G 1552- equipment → Chapter.
The faults affecting the operation of the lambda control may only be consulted after a test run of at least ten minutes.
Sporadic problems are recorded in the fault memory with a specific indication that a “sporadic fault” has occurred. In the display, these faults appear with the additional initials “/SP”. Sporadic faults may be caused by a loose connection or intermittent cable integrity. If a sporadic fault does not reoccur during 10 subsequent engine starts, the fault memory will be erased.
Once the problem has been eliminated, the fault memory must be erased → Chapter.
  Note
To obtain general information about the self-diagnosis, refer to the -V.A.G 1551- and -V.A.G 1552- instruction manuals.
