Engine control unit: adapting to the throttle valve drive unit
Engine control unit: adapting to the throttle valve drive unit
Through the adaptation, with the ignition on and the engine off, the engine control unit learns different throttle valve positions. These positions are stored in the control unit. The two throttle valve drive angle senders confirm the momentary position of the throttle valve.
The adaptation must carried out in the following cases:
t  after an interruption in voltage supply
t  after cleaning or removing and fitting the throttle valve drive unit
t  after replacing the throttle valve drive unit
t  change of throttle valve drive unit due to change of engine
t  after replacing the engine control unit
Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or Vehicle systems checker -V.A.G 1552- with Lead -V.A.G 1551/3B-
Test conditions
l  Ignition on, engine off
l  There must not be any faults stored in the memory → Chapter, Fault memory: consulting and clearing.
l  Battery voltage, 11.5 V minimum
l  On vehicles with air conditioner, the AC must be off.
l  All electrical consumers, for example lights and heated rear window, must be off.
l  The throttle valve must be at the idling position (during the test the accelerator pedal must not be depressed).
l  The throttle valve drive unit must be clean (free of burnt oil deposits).
l  Coolant temperature: 5 … 105 °C → Anchor, display field 3.
Work sequence
–  Connect the -V.A.G 1551- (-V.A.G 1552-). Switch on the ignition and enter “address code” 01 to select the engine control unit. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine control unit → Chapter.).
  W00-0459
The display reads:
–  Press 0 and 4 for the function “Start basic settings” and press Q to confirm the entry.

Rapid data transmission HELP
Select function XX
The display reads:
–  Press 0, 6 and 0 for “Display group number 60” and press Q to confirm the entry.

Basic settings HELP
Enter display group number XXX
The display reads: (1 … 4 = display fields)
After pressing Q, first the voltage to the throttle valve drive is cut.
t  Self-adaptation step 1: The engine control unit checks that all test conditions are met.
t  Self-adaptation step 2: The voltage to the throttle valve drive unit is cut (emergency driving position). The emergency driving position values received by the angle senders are stored in the control unit.
t  Self-adaptation step 3: The throttle valve adjusts to a value above the point of emergency driving.
t  Self-adaptation step 4: The final stage of the throttle valve drive is deactivated. The mechanical spring now has a certain time to position the throttle valve at the previously learnt emergency driving position (spring test: return).
t  Self-adaptation step 5: The throttle valve drive closes the throttle valve (lower mechanical limit).
t  Self-adaptation step 6: The values of the angle senders for the lower mechanical limit are stored in the control unit. Then, using those values, the lower electronic limit is defined (calculated) and stored in the control unit.
t  Self-adaptation step 7: The final stage of the throttle valve drive is deactivated at lower mechanical limit. The mechanical spring now has to position the throttle valve at the emergency driving position (spring test: opening).
t  Self-adaptation step 8: The angle sender values are revised.

Basic settings  60                    ->
      xx % xx % x ADP. ON
The display reads: (1 … 4 = display fields)
The adaptation has been successful.
–  After at least 30 seconds, end the adaptation by pressing .
–  Press 0 and 6 for the function “End data transmission” and press Q to confirm the entry.
To store the values:
–  Switch off the ignition.
  Note!
t  If the control unit interrupts basic settings, this may be due to different reasons:
t  The test conditions are not met.
t  The throttle valve drive unit or wiring is faulty, test → Chapter.
t  After an interruption a fault is stored in the memory. When the ignition is switched on again, basic settings are carried out again automatically.

Basic settings  60                    ->
      xx % xx % 8 ADP. OK
