Slide travel sender -G149- and Dosifier -N146- checking
The dosifier is an electromagnetic change-over regulator which is controlled through the control unit via a specific proportion of the period. The eccentric shaft of the dosifier displaces the slide travel on the high pressure piston thus defining the injection throughflow.
The slide travel sender transmits the position of the dosifier to the control unit -N146-, which means that the amount injected is indicated.
   
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand multimete -V.A.G 1526A- or multimeter -V.A.G 1715-
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551- or vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
t  Auxiliary measuring set -V.A.G 1594A- or -V.A.G 1594C-
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/18A-
t  Current flow diagram

Test sequence
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- (V.A.G 1552) and select engine electronics control unit with the “address code” 01. When doing so the engine must be idling. (Fault reader: Connecting and selecting the engine electronics control unit → Chapter.)
   
Indicated on display:
–  Press keys 0 and 8 for the function “Read measured value block” and confirm entry with Q-key.
  
Rapid data transfer                 HELP
Select function XX
Indicated on display:
–  Press the keys 0, 0 and 1 for “Value group number 1” and confirm entry with the Q-key.
  
Read measured value block           HELP
Enter value group number XXX
Indicated on display:
–  Check the coolant liquid temperature indicated in display zone 4. Specification: 85 °C min.
Continue the check only when the coolant temperature has been reached
  
Read measured value block 1           ->
840/min    6.5 mg/H    1.480 V   87.3 °C
–  Check the voltage of the slide travel sender displayed in field 3. Specification: 1,400...1,800 V
–  If the specification is not reached, check the slide travel sender and dosifier as follows:

–  Press the →-key.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End data transfer” function and confirm input with the Q-key.
–  Switch ignition off.
  
Read measured value block 1           ->
840/min    6.5 mg/H    1.480 V   87.3 °C
–  Remove the fuel temperature sender connector (connector to the fuel measuring system of the injector pump).
–  Test resistance between contacts 1 + 2 and 2 + 3 of connector. Specification: 5... 7 Ω
If the specification is not obtained:
–  Replace injector pump → Chapter.
If the specification is obtained:
  N23-0007
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/18- to control unit wiring harness.
  V29-0062
–  Check wiring for open circuit between test box and connector using current flow diagram. Contact 1 + socket 29. Contact 2 + socket 7. Contact 3 + socket 52. Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω max.
–  Additionally, check wires for shorts to one another, to vehicle earth or to battery positive.Specification: ∞Ω
If no wiring fault is detected:
–  Replace diesel direct injection control unit -J248- → Chapter.
Dosifier -N146- checking
–  Press the →-key.
–  Press keys 0 and 6 for the “End data transfer” function and confirm input with the Q-key.
–  Switch ignition off.
  N23-0008
–  Remove connector for the dosifier (connector to the fuel measuring system of the injector pump).
–  Test resistance between contacts 5 +,6 of the connector. Specification: 0,5...2,5 Ω
If the specification is not obtained:
–  Replace injector pump → Chapter.
If the specification is obtained:
  N23-0007
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/18- to control unit wiring harness.
  V29-0062
–  Check wiring for open circuit between test box and connector using current flow diagram. Contact 5 + socket 23, 45 and 68. Contact 6 + socket 4, 5 and 49. Wire resistance: max. 1.5 Ω max.
–  Additionally, check wires for shorts to one another, to vehicle earth or to battery positive.Specification: ∞Ω
–  Replace diesel direct injection control unit -J248- → Chapter.
