Connecting fault reader V.A.G 1551 and selecting engine control unit
Connecting fault reader -V.A.G 1551- and selecting engine control unit
Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Fault reader -V.A.G 1551-

t  Cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-
  Note!
The vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- can be used instead of the fault reader -V.A.G 1551-, although a printout will not be possible in such cases.
Checking conditions
l  Battery voltage, OK
l  Fuse 21 OK
l  Earth connection between engine and gearbox, OK
Test sequence
–  Remove driver side shelf.
  W00-1038
–  Connect fault reader -V.A.G 1551- (or -V.A.G 1552-) with cable -V.A.G 1551/3B-.
After the fault reader has been connected, depending upon desired function:
–  Switch ignition on or start the engine → Anchor, table “Selectable functions”.
  Note!
t  If the display does not indicate the messages described in the work sequence: → Fault reader operating instructions.
t  If the message “Fault in the data transfer!” is displayed due to an input fault, remove wire from fault reader, reconnect it and repeat work sequence.

–  Operate the fault reader taking into account the information on the display:
–  Press key 1 for “Rapid data transfer”.
–  Press keys 0 and 1 for address code “Engine electronics” and confirm entry with the Q key.

The control unit identification is shown in the fault reader -V.A.G 1551- display, for example:
t  028906021HA=control unit part number (for latest control unit version see Parts Catalogue)
t  1.9l = Engine displacement
t  R4 = engine architecture (4-cyl. in line engine)
t  EDC = injection system (Electronic Diesel Control)
t  SG = gear type: manual gearbox
t  1434 = version of control unit software
t  Coding 00005, coding variant
t  WSC xxxxx = Workshop code from -V.A.G 1551-, of the workshop who carried out the last coding. (If the factory coding has not been changed, WSC 00000 appears)
–  Press the key.
